From J.J. Cooper's Q & A on Indy leageu signings of Indy "prospects"

Info regarding singings of Pete Perez, Marquis Riley, Race Parmenter -- who were all named "top prospects" by BBA?
Those are the three that I’ve heard about. Riley intrigues me a lot, as there aren’t a lot of middle infielders in indy ball who seem to have a chance to stay in the middle infield. Riley has a better chance than most to stick up the middle and you can’t help but love his feel for hitting–he was the toughest player in all of the NCAA to strike out in 2011.

    2. Pete Perez, rhp, Southern Illinois (Frontier)

    Born: Dec. 8, 1990. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 5-11. Wt.: 225.

An all-conference starting pitcher as a senior at Division II Tarleton (Texas) State, Perez jumped right from Tarleton’s rotation to Southern Illinois’ bullpen. It was an easy transition for the short righthander, as he pumped 90-93 mph fastballs, touching 95, an average to tick above-average changeup and a useable curveball by Frontier League hitters. Perez ran out of gas late in the season, allowing 8 of his 13 runs allowed in a five-outing stretch in late August, which is a reminder that he could tighten up what was generally described as a soft body.

    6. Race Parmenter, rhp, Southern Illinois (Frontier)

    Born: May 24, 1991. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 185.

Frontier League hitters simply didn’t have a chance against Parmenter’s split-finger fastball. Parmenter would get ahead of hitters with his 88-90 mph fastball that touches 92 and then he’d put them away with the split.
“You can’t lay off of it,” Southern Illinois manager Mike Pinto said. “He can throw it for a strike and he can throw it where you can’t hit it. He’s got great command of it.”
Parmenter served as UC Irvine’s closer this year and quickly moved into the same role with the Miners. He began his Southern Illinois career by not allowing an earned run in nine straight outings stretching over 14 innings. He finished it by throwing nine more scoreless outings stretching 12 ⅔ innings.

    7. Marquis Riley, 2b, Joliet (Frontier)

    Born: July 26, 1990. B-T: L-R. Ht.: 5-11. Wt.: 205

Riley was the toughest player in Division I baseball to strike out during his junior year at North Carolina A&T in 2011. He carried that approach into the Frontier League, walking more than he struck out (41 walks, 35 strikeouts) as a rookie. Riley has a short stroke, an opposite-field approach and the mindset of a top-of-the-order hitter. He’s a 60 runner who was one of the better second basemen defensively in the Frontier League.

Any info on Braves in-season signing Brandon Cunniff, Chris Edmondson, and Ryan Hinson?
J.J. Cooper: All 3 were more needed org players than top prospects, but if you asked me to pick one who has a chance to surprise, I’ll go with Cunniff but there’s reason to be skeptical with all three.

    Early updates:

    Jordan Parraz signs with Arizona.
Braves re-sign would-be minor league FA Robert Fish. Signed C Jerrol Guzman (and can find nothing about him!)
    Buchter, Obispo added to 40-man
    Gosselin dropped from 40-man

I love how aggressive the Braves have been to find talent everywhere. Even if all they get is a back end major league bullpen arm or the last man off the bench its a success.

Rico, thanks for making this thread. This will be helpful moving forward.

Poveda and Carrithers are the two players on this list that some other team will do well by picking up. Poveda just got lost in the numbers game given all the pitching we're going to have in AAA next year. Carrithers is a nice utility player with good on-base skills. I can see both making a contribution at the major league level.

    Released Joe Bisenious

    Signed minor league FAs
    OF Alex Arias
P Albert Campos (6-4, from VZ) was a well-regarded prospect for Rockies, released in spring 2012 after off-field incident, still only 22 yr. old
1B Seth Loman (6-foot-4, lefty hitter, age 27, 14 HRs last year with Charlotte and Bowie)

    Correct spelling is Jerol Guzman.

It appears that Guzman and Arias (Elias not Alex) are international free agent signings who are entering the pros for the first time.

Not seeing much in terms of prospects in our own minor league free agents. Poveda is probably the best of the lot, although Carrithers will stick around for a few more years because of his versatility. I saw Lugo pitch once and he looked okay. But looking okay in AA is something like being the best-looking woman in the bar at closing time. I wonder where Yohan Flambe will end up.

RHP Benino Pruneda has been re-signed. Was drafted way back in 2007. Did not pitch in 2011-12 due to injury.

C Jose Yepez has been re-signed. Will presumably be Bethancourt's backup in AAA.

C Matt Kennelly has been signed after being released by the Reds. Aussie first signed with the Braves in 2005. Will probably be in AA.

LHP Brady Feigl has been signed. A NDFA out of Mount St. Mary's.

OF Jose George has signed. Can't find anything on him. My guess is he is an international signing.

C Steve Lerud has signed. Was in the Phillies organization last year. Has major league experience. My guess is he will be in AAA. Looks like we will carry three catchers there.

Rule V draft was huge non-event today. Braves out of the mix in MLB portion. In minor league portion, lost Mike Lee to Diamondbacks. Lee (9-8, 3.77 in two levels) had been salvaged off the Frontier League scrap heap in 2012 after years as a Red Sox farmhand.

Also lost Blaine Sims to Astros. Sims was a previous washout who worked at nearly every level in 2013 as he developed a knuckleball. No one was claimed.

Sims was so bad I'm surprised even the Astros wanted him.

Sims is trying to become a knuckleball pitcher so the Astros must see something they at least want to try.

Good point. Plus Phil Niekro had high praise for his knuckleball too.

Get a load of LOOOGY for Gwinnett, Atahualpa Severino. Signed as FA, he was lights out in 2013: 39 games with Pitt and KC AAA, .171 vs. LHP. Overall, 58 K in 54 IP. Still only 29, 5-11, 220. Briefly a pro with Washington in 2011.

Good pickup. He or Buchter will probably be our second lefty in the pen until Venters returns.

How about Ian Thomas, the 26 year old lefty who pitched very well for Mississippi last year, ERA 2.76, WHIP 1.045, K/9 10.6? Could he be another option as a second lefty?
