Yeah, I don’t think I would complain if I did something that stupid. What did he expect? Anyone doing something like that should fully expect the possibility of getting hurt.

Obviously not what you want, but people are way overreacting to 14 games.

Since April 16th (127 PA), he's .221/.252/.418. Hes struggling, and the sample size is growing.

Good thing we're not paying him a lot

I don’t think they should expect to potentially get that hurt, though. People who run on the field are idiots, but tackling someone onto a short wall like that is probably overboard.

I don't think the Braves can get Dee Gordon for him now...missed that opportunity.

    Since March 28 (195 PAs) he's hitting .257/.303/.42.

See I can play that game too.

It's really been that last 5 games that have tanked his May. He started out hot the 1st 4 games, then cooled off s little the next 5, then went.ice cold since.

We have seen no improvement from the LHH side. We could stomach the lower power and average if he walked at a higher clip. He should be more selecting knowing that's his weaker side and there is a smaller zone of pitches he is capable of driving. Instead he swings at everything.

If this was the playoffs I would agree. But we have months to go. Use one of our thousand pitchers and bump everyone back. I think Newk needs another go and if he post well he might slot in to Folty’s place if he can’t get right.

The "bat speed" issue with Riley was really a "swing length" issue.

There is a good explanation of it in Kiley's article about Riley's call up:

    https://blogs.fangraphs.com/called-up-austin-riley/

While his stats have been standout every stop of his career, his deep hand load, which helps create the separation from his body that manufactures the power, was getting too deep and sometimes barring out his front arm, which was changing his path to the ball. He’s been working on consistently keeping that front arm flexed, which helps him maintain the athleticism and bat control in his swing to get around on hard stuff on his hands and have better plate coverage.

Looking at the slow video it is easy to see Riley's hands go back towards the catcher before he swings. That's "deep hand load", and is what causes his swing to be long if it gets too deep.

Compare that to other swings of MLB players, and you will notice some don't have the dramatic movement that lengthens their swings, and some do. It seems to me that's something that can be tinkered with, and it looks like Riley has already successfully tinkered with it.

the comments on that article are about the Braves signing Riley to an 8 year 15 million deal. This isn't going away anytime soon.

It’s not just the comments section either lol.
The last two articles I’ve read about the next few MLB free agent classes from espn both had snarky comments from the writers about the Braves cheapness.
It’s pretty awesome for us that we have gotten such great value signings with our own young players lately but it’s going to be interesting to see if free agents will give us the time of day since we fairly or unfairly have the cheap label on us..
