Don't be so sure. Howard got 10 million in 2008 which is the current record I believe. And that would be 7 years ago and baseball salaries have inflated since then. And Trout is undoubtedly a much better player then Howard was when he went into arbitration. And that's without even looking at defense.

Homer Bailey gets a 105M extension over 6 years from the Rojos. Covers his last arb year at about 10M and 5 free agency years at about 19M/year. Will affect the market for extensions for guys like Lester and Masterson who are also a year from free agency. Interesting to see what Bailey is getting compared to Ubaldo Jimenez.
Not as directly relevant for any potential extensions to Minor and Medlen, but those guys will be watching too.

I know Bailey has a ton of potential, but hasn't he only been a slightly better than average pitcher the last couple of seasons? ERA+ of 112 and 110 the last two years...2.5 and 3.2 WAR in those years.
It does seem an overpay. He and Jimenez are similar imo. Main difference is the draft pick the Orioles are giving up. But we shouldn't exaggerate that. The Reds by re-signing Bailey are giving up on the draft pick they could have potentially received when Bailey would have hit free agency.
Homer Bailey is not worth $19M AAV. That's ridiculous!
Weren't there rumblings about trying to trade for him last season too? Like I said a ton of potential, but that is a lot...plus a 25 million option. Seems pretty crazy.
At this rate the Braves won't be able to sign any meaningful free agents...they'll have to try and lock up their young players and hope that they get others developed in the minors before the contracts are up.
