That's impressive what you were able to glean out of 3 innings in 2 whole games.

And yet he leads the Southern League in strikeouts after just turning 21.

Have any of the pitchers in Gwinnett fared well this year? It seems like everytime I look in this thread that two of the AAA guys got shelled.

You're right. I suppose I was expecting far more dominant performances than I've seen this year from that group, and especially from Wilson. I thought he looked like the most ready to contribute of all the farm arms this year.

yeah he's been a little disappointing. but then he was probably never as good as he showed, anyway. chef doing the review of his stuff didn't instill a ton of confidence. still time to improve as he's only 21. and he probably has the stuff to be a reliever.

Then why not make him a reliever?

    Oh I forgot - we've got a great pen.

he probably will be eventually. i think he's still young enough to develop further. ideally he'll still be a starter.
who said we have a great pen? where are you going with that sarcastic comment here? does it have any relevance?

A 20 or 21 year old with a 3.60 per/9 at AA is not exactly much of a concern... especially when you see how quickly he sees results after making adjustments.
He decreased his BB rate to 3.60 in 100 IP at A+. He was then promoted to AA where in 80 IP it sits at 4.73. So it's still a problem.

Control issues are one of the hardest things for a young pitcher to fix. It can be done. There are plenty of examples. It looks like Fried may have done it this year. However, there are plenty of examples of prospects struggling with control who have never seen it sufficiently improve (see Sean Newcomb). Lack of control is the biggest reason young pitchers with good stuff bust out.

I'm in no way calling Anderson a bust. Calling him a bust at this point would be a big overreaction. He is, as you point out, very young and has plenty of time to hone his craft. It's just that he has to fix the BBs or he's never going to be more than a number 3 or 4 starter. When a young pitcher's potential is so constrained by a problem that is notoriously difficult to fix, I call it a major concern. It's not an overreaction to say that.

If Anderson never fixes his walk problems, he could still have good value. If he can limit his HRs and keep his K rate high, he could be a Robbie Ray type pitcher. Not exactly what you hope for from a 3rd overall pitcher but far better than a bust.

This is encouraging but not definitive. There are plenty of guys with good enough stuff to get minor leaguers to swing at it outside of the zone but who don't have good enough stuff to get major leaguers to chase. It's why I really want to see more data on Anderson. It would be nice if he got a cup of coffee when rosters expand so we could see things like the spin rate on his curve and how much his fastball actually moves.

How am I overreacting? Noting a BB/9 well over 4 for a young pitcher is cause for concern is hardly overraction.

But go ahead and engage in your ad hominems if they make you feel better.

With how bad the pen is this year I'd probably move him there and let him cut his teeth in Atlanta out of the pen. It doesn't have to be a permanent move if he develops some more and can start. Wainwright closed out a Cards World Series and then went on to be an ace starter. I don't get why teams are sometimes scared of this.

Keep in mind that the IL has exploded offensively this year. I looked at the numbers a couple weeks back and something like 7 teams had a TEAM OPS over .850. Not very many pitchers are going to have success against that.
