Who do you want to be our Closer after all is said and done here? I want Felipe Vázquez or Will Smith. Kirby Yates would be the dream but San Diego will surely want a haul for him!

I predict another SP bc the pitching obsessed rebuild has unfortunately failed to produce enough playoff caliber starting pitching

it’s funny because there was like zero pitching in the system. zero.
still haven’t heard a plan on how to otherwise acquire good legit pitching for a while major league team.

Pretty sure sturg’s point isn’t that the system is barren of pitching, but that so far only one of those guys looks like a one or two, and the remainder look like three-to-fives or bullpen guys.

Shrug. The most expensive starter on two division champs is Julion. Seems like it worked out all right.

You’re already calling this year’s team a division champion?

(And, if so, that’ll be false, given Keuchel’s contract.)

    Yes. It’s in the bag.

The most expensive starter on two division winners will be Keuchel. Shrug.

I mean Soroka, Folty, Newk, and Fried have been pretty solid so far in their careers, even if Folty and Newk haven't been that good this year so far.

In what universe has Newk been solid? Other than Soroka, none of the other pitchers have established themselves as anything other than a back of the rotation starter or reliever. Then when you throw in guys like Gohara, Jenkins, and ManBan...yeah the pitching revolution hasn’t materialized perfectly. Yes it’s given us a lot of depth and the availability of spot starters, but to call all of the above solid is quite a reach.

Newcomb has been solid in every sense of the word "solid"

Before this year, Newk was a 2ish WAR starting pitcher. That's the very definition of a solid mid-rotation pitcher. And Folty was a 3 WAR pitcher just last season, placing him in the top 20 in all of baseball.

Jenkins was never considered a top prospect. ManBan was a reclamation project that we invested 2 middle relievers into. I'm not sure why you brought either of them up. The only true top pitching prospects from the rebuild that have busted so far are Blair and Wisler. Maybe you could argue Gohara and Allard, though both are still young enough to get more looks.

I actually still think Foltynewicz can get back to being a 3+ win pitcher, I think Toussaint will ultimately develop into a solid #3 who looks like an ace on good days, I think Wilson is really underrated and will end up starting for Atlanta, and am very interested to see how Anderson responds when he’s inevitably promoted to Gwinnett.

Having said all that: the Braves have big aspirations in 2019, which I think is key context for sturg’s point. At the moment, the pitching stockpile hasn’t developed as quickly as the Braves competitive window has—which I think is why we’ll see Anthopoulos continue to pursue rotational upgrades more assiduously than bullpen help. For several reasons (one more year of arb, Toronto connection, groundball-inducer to pair with a good infield defense, strong peripherals), I think Stroman makes a lot of sense for Atlanta.
