Not sure I'd want to trade a Wilson or a Muller for a couple months of a player.

Boston system is pretty bad, Nats system is mostly top heavy, Yanks are in on SP more than RP's.

Sure the Giants dont have to trade him but getting something for him is better than nothing given his contract situation.

I agree, i'm just saying we could get a rental without parting with a Waters/Wright/Pache/Anderson type.

If you're talking below that level, then maybe true.

I have to think most GMs and talent scouts are smart enough to evaluate Wright, Muller, Wentz on their own -- not comparing them to Anderson as has been the case here.

    Absolutely right.

Now, everybody that wasn't scared *hitless in the 8th and 9th today please raise your hand.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Muller made a top 50 list last week. Baseball prospectus. The rest are probably trash but still too much for a rental reliever.

Wheeler and no BP arm as Fried transitions at the end of the season to the pen.

I expect at least one bullpen arm, possibly even Smith and maybe a starter too.

AA has already said Fried and Soroka will not be managed by going into the pen

Fried could end up the pen, just not to limit his innings. More likely due to being replaced by someone else in rotation. He has a 6.14 ERA in his last 7 and 5.13 ERA in his last 15. He could be replaced by Gausman and/or Folty at some point if one or both get back on track.

I think AA gets Bumgarner/Smith in late July after Wheeler and Stroman are traded. AA cites Bumgarner's elite playoff record as the reason they traded for him and the chef has an aneurysm.

You mean the guy who hasn't pitched in a playoff game in 3 years and hasn't been a good pitcher since.... hmmm... 3 years ago? Yeah, I love paying top dollar for 3 year old production that will just magically come back even though it hasn't yet.

While, I think it will only count as a good acquisition if we overpay for Bumgarner, it's possible we do something silly and acquire him without overpaying.

Possible. People tend to forget but the Giants during one of their playoff runs actually took Bumgarner out of the rotation because he was pitching poorly. Of course, when they put him back in he pitched extremely well. The point is once you get to the post-season the criterion for selection changes radically. You need to focus on who is doing well here and now. If a hitter has lost confidence or a pitcher has lost his feel for his slider or curve, forget about using them. Bumgarner might be an improvement over internal options in the short run, but that's mainly because a lot of weird things can happen in the short run.

Bum basically grades out as roughly the same dude as Fried, Teheran, Gausman. I might rather have him than any of the three in a rotation (actually maybe I'd lean Gausman if he were going right), but not at the expense of giving up a whole lot. I think he'll probably command less of a return than people assume. It seems to me that returns at the deadline have been declining on aging assets and rentals, but I guess there is a deal or two every year that looks bad immediately.

Mlb.com writer Anthony Castrovince suggested this deal

    Braves get MadBum and Smith
Giants get Bryse Wilson, Kolby Allard, and Justin Smith

    I’d do that deal

This is prediction. Not what I want to happen.
