Doubtful. 6 years and $200M+ is like $35M per year. Rendon will be $150M+ though.

I'm glad AA is smart enough not to "use just about all our money" on a single player.

    I'd do 6/150, 5/150 for Rendon but i suspect he'll get more.

2 year/25M AAV would work for me

but maybe not for Donaldson...he will probably get some 3 or 4 year offers

A 2 year deal works for both sides, but a 3-4 year deal takes him to his age 36/37 seasons, and if a pick is involved, not sure teams go that far.

2/50 is probably what i'd do though.

One thing I haven't seen the Braves do that I think could help them get guys on shorter deals is short contracts with options that carry large buyouts.

For example, offer JD 2/45 plus a 3rd year $25M option with a $10M buyout. JD then either gets 2/55 or 3/70, and the Braves are protected against that 3rd year a bit.

Same type of deal for Grandal.

It all depends. He may be at an age and place in his career-path where comfort and winning are worth more to him than the marginal* gain of, say, 3/$65 versus 2/$50, plus whatever smaller guarantee he might get after that 2/$50.

    * Yes: it’s gross to think of $15-million as “marginal”.

One of these idiotic NL East teams that needs a 3B is going to offer Donaldson a 4-year deal in an effort to “win now”, once they miss out on Rendon of course. Those teams being the Mets and especially the Phillies.

Nats might too if they lose Rendon, since they love taking our players and aren’t averse to giving out stupid contracts themselves at times. Nats are pretty smart though, so maybe not.

I dont think the Mets will, they're pretty set in position players.

Philly i can see but their top prospect Bohm is a 3B and will be ready in a year or so. Philly needs pitching alot more than a 3B.

The Nats top prospect is an IF prospect who slots to replace Rendon if they cant sign him. I suppose i could see them sign JD though if they lost Rendon if JD wasnt signed til then.

Are the Mets really going to count on JD Davis in 2020?

Phillies will do something stupid like sign Donaldson and put Bohm at 2B. (I’m only half-joking.)

Mets still have Cano, but between Cano, McNeil and Davis, i dont think they'll go after a 3B, could be wrong of course.

Nothing will surprise me in what Philly does.

The key with Donaldson is to get a deal done before other teams can bid. I know that wasnt the case last year but I think he could have got a better deal than what he signed with us for. 2 years 50 million with an option for year 3.

    Josh Donaldson

He’s having a really good year so what would an extension look like? I saw an interview with AA this morning where they talked about it a little bit and he said JD wanted a 1 year deal so he could become a FA next year and get more money. A QO is gonna hurt him at his age so figure that in to an extension. I’d say 2/50 with an option for a 3rd year but I’m afraid somebody will offer him 4 guaranteed but he looks like he’s having a blast here and has a really good team around him so who knows.

I think 2 yrs 3rd option is perfect for the Braves. Which means Donaldson's agent will try and get 3 years guaranteed with option for 4 from another team and will probably get it.

Must be referring to the article in the Athletic by DOB about AA.

Not sure what it says though.

    This seems really likely.

Id have another bopper on speed dial, and look for some pop to sub in somewhere else as well.

Not sure what it says though.
    Per Anthopoulos:

“If our best team is with Austin Riley in the outfield and Josh Donaldson at third base, and that makes sense, we’ll do that. … There’s clearly room for both guys; we can see a team with both guys. Problem is, one guy’s a free agent. And I expect the market for him to be strong because of the year that he’s had and what he’s done.”

But what of the final months before Donaldson formally returns to the open market? Is there any possibility of a late-season extension? Addressing the topic generally, Anthopoulos said “there might be a scenario” where the club engages in contract talks during a season. But that’s not idea, he indicated. Ultimately, there’s really no reason to believe Donaldson won’t become a free agent. After all, that was the point of his decision to take a one-year deal in the first place.

Donaldson's gonna be very disappointed when he finds out the Braves Organization is very cheap in paying the premium for anything. Not AA's fault of course.
