Trying to squeeze there would've risked him missing the bunt (which he has plenty) and then leading to there being 2 outs.

He'd have been better off just holding on to the bat and heading to the dugout.

That's possible. I also imagine it's hard for any major leaguer to just stand there and strike out on purpose. But still, Snit should have been on top of that and reminded him of the situation before he went up to bat.
