I thought it would be a little more than Wentz, but this is a good deal for AA if its just him and TD.

Scouting Greene's splits he has consistently held batters under .200 all season. His sinker is his primary pitch and its give up 9.8% line drives and 73% ground balls this year. Every other year of his career it was around 26% line drives and 48% ground balls.

I'm not overly thrilled about Greene because he's due for regression, but he still manages to get the job done even when he doesn't have the luck on his side. The best thing about the moves is that it makes the bullpen that much deeper.

he should be an above-average closer even with regression. This deal was terrific and there’s really nothing to complain about.

I think Wentz will pitch in the big leagues at some point, but he had fallen behind a few guys and if one of that group had to be moved, it's Wentz hands-down. Curious to see if Demeritte gets a shot or if he teams up with Dustin Peterson in Toledo (where Mike Hessman is the hitting coach).

    Interesting morsel from Bowman:

The need to include Wentz was necessitated when the Dodgers and Nationals made a late push for Detroit’s closer. Atlanta had initially hoped to get this deal done at the cost of Demeritte and Minor League catcher Alex Jackson.

Not surprising with the Braves signing Jack Ryan Murphy

I’m just glad we upgraded the bullpen. All 3 of the new guys should help us a ton down the stretch and in the playoffs and they’re controllable for next year to so AA won’t have to address the bullpen a whole lot in the offseason.

Where was this morsel of knowledge prior to the trade being reported by national reporters? Bowman and DOB always make these big shows of vast inside knowledge, but they are proven either wrong or ignorant far too often to believe any of it.

I doubt Bowman had this morsel prior to the trade. The front office under AA is pretty leak proof. But I imagine they are more willing to share some of these morsels after the trade goes down.

The national reporters mostly get their scoops from agents. FO tells an agent what's up. Agent passes it on.

The Braves went “above and beyond” their payroll budget for this season to remake their bullpen at the trade deadline, general manager Alex Anthopoulos said.

The Braves added almost $7 million to the 2019 payroll by acquiring relief pitchers Shane Greene, Chris Martin and Mark Melancon in three separate trades Tuesday and Wednesday.

Melancon will be paid about $4.6 million, Greene about $1.33 million and Martin about $750,000 for the remaining two months of the season. Those amounts are prorated portions of their contracts for the full season.

“We’re going to go a pretty significant chunk over our allocated budget for the current year to make these deals,” Anthopoulos said.

He said Braves chairman Terry McGuirk “gave me the approval very fast to do that, (and) I’m certainly grateful we were able to do that again, two years in a row.”

    Olney:

Braves were in on Zack Greinke Trade conversations, but it was just too pricey, and too much risk on an older pitcher. He fits better in Houston budget.

I do wonder what it would cost from a prospect standpoint. Astros didnt give up Tucker or Whitley, so something like Wilson, Muller, Contreras, and Tarnok. Thats pretty steep. Maybe even more.
