And it was right after Markakis got hurt that some folks (not me) said that the Duvall/Joyce platoon would easily outdo Neck's performance. So much for that.

Not sure he’s better than Hechavarría with the glove.

Hechavarria has been a minus and lacked in range more the last few years, but he was among the best in the past.

Shortstops have been comedy gang recently regardless of their pedigrees. I'd guess they probably cut Hechevarria when Dansby is ready to come back, and if guys aren't going to be on the postseason roster and aren't going to be here next year, then there's not much to be lost cutting them loose a month early.

Metrics have him slightly below-average this year, but above-average to very good the previous four seasons. He’s thirty, but given the noise associated with single-season defensive metrics, I’m willing to bet he’s still a true-talent above-average defender. I don’t know that I’d make the same wager on Culberson (and I’d definitely wager that Camargo is below-average).

He isn’t. But he’s way better with the bat. Hechavarria couldn’t hit his wife if he changed his name to Addison Russell.

Wouldn’t you rather have the positive glove AND bat starting?

Our pen gets BABIP'd to death every game it seems. Give me a the best defender at ss we can get. In the last week, Charlie and johan booted a big DP late

Normally, probably. But with Soroka on the bump, I think I’m fine with the better D (cue Stroman joke).

Culberson brings a better bat and glove as far as numbers go, I don't get living the past making Hechevarria our starting shortstop. If anything use him as a sub late for defense considering his bat sucks.

In the short term, they are probably about the same with the glove. So it comes down to the bat and we are going with someone who cannot hit.

It’s not really “living in the past” to take single-season defensive metrics with fleur-de-sel against the larger, and still recent, sample.
