    Prospects become currency

Just out of curiosity, I checked the stats of all the prospects who have been dealt. The news about Allard was my push to look.

    Since traded,

    Kolby Allard (TEX) 6 games, all starts: 4-0, 3.78, 33 IP, 35 H, 11 BB, 29 K
    Joey Wentz (Erie, Det. Class AA): 5 games, 5 starts, 2-0, 2.10, 26 IP, 20 H, 4 H, 37 K
    Travis Demeritte (DET) 34 G, 121 AB, .231, 28 H, 4 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 SB, 47 K (played OF exclusive)
    Tristan Beck (SF, Class A San Jose) 6 G, 6 starts, 3-2, 2.27, 36 IP, 33 H, 13 BB, 37 K
    Dan Winkler (SF, Class AAA Sacramento) 12 games, 0 starts, 0-1, 0 saves, 14 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 9 K

Demeritte has been pretty horrid both offensively and defensively. Hope he turns it around.

Glad we didn't depend on him being a late season contributor like I suggested a few months ago.

The one I really laugh about is Beck. He was simply terrible in the Braves' system. Some of that may relate to recovery issues and it is a small sample. I doubt it has anything to do with getting back to California, but whatever it is, he's pitched much better since joining the Giants' system.

We may regret trading Wentz. Allard probably settles in as a back of the rotation guy, but I think Wentz could be more than that. Winkler and Demeritte are probably AAAA guys.

I've always maintained, even after his terrible debuut, that I thought Allard would still make it as back of the rotation starter if nothing else. The improved velocity he has shown this year gives him a better ceiling. Randy Wolf as the ceiling and Chris Capuano as the floor.

And there is value there. Both of those guys hung around for more than a decade. Hitting and pitching approaches have changed since those two played, which makes one wonder if they would have been as effective in the game as it is played now, but if Allard can spot his fastball and strengthen his secondary stuff, I think he can have some measure of success.

This is the issue with Allard: https://www.fangraphs.com/graphs.asp...FA&ymin=&ymax=

With the Braves he was 89-90 on the heater, with the Rangers he is 92-93.

There is a big difference between 90 Allard and 93 Allard. What happened?

his fastball is now pretty average and his new cutter is above average.

He's hitting his spots this year as well.

I think they overpaid a bit for the bullpen upgrades. At least in comparison with last year's deadline acquisitions.

It's funny that Allard for Martin seemed to be the best of the deals and now it seems the worst. We will have way overpaid if he becomes a backend starter, but we have plenty of backend starters. Really I bet what AA is trying to avoid is to not trade off a current starter prospect that could later be a valuable bullpen piece. It was hard to see how Allard would every help much in the bullpen. Same with Wentz.

If you look at all the pitchers we've dumped in the last few years, we could have used John Gant the most this year. The pitcher that seems to now be falling in that same category is Touki.

Big step back this season. I thought he could develop into a shut-down bullpen guy, but he seems to be a guy that needs an inning to settle in. Still has lots of sizzle to his game.

I expected and dreaded the Wentz trade. He was my favorite of this year's pitching prospects. I recognized that I was an outlier there and he would likely be dealt. He has a presence on the mound that I haven't seen from any other pitcher I've watched in minors. I know the odds are terrible but I'll be stunned if he isn't an average or better starting pitcher in MLB.

There isn't statcast in the minors but I saw Allard pitch before he was traded and I saw an uptick on his overall stuff. I was thinking it was a juiced stadium gun until the guy sitting 2 rows down gun showed 94.

I personally wanted to keep Allard and give him more of a chance to try to build more value with the Braves.
