He needs to produce roughly 12 WAR over the life of the contract to be worth it. I think that's totally doable considering his last couple of seasons, but the injury concerns with him make it a pretty big risk. Certainly a lot of money/years to guarantee to a guy that's never pitched more than 200 innings.
I'll say it again, they should have went after Cole/Stras if they were willing to spend "stupid money."

Take it with a grain of salt:

I like Wheeler but Hamels for 1 year was the SP i wanted the most, not to mention he can mentor Fried and teach him his wipeout CH. Can offer a QO at the end of the season and not be stuck with a potentially albatross contract. The Braves/Bumgarner rumors scared me as well.
Current payroll is around 132 right now if arb projections are correct, and Braves still need a power bat to bring back JD or replace him.

Certainly not easy. But given his last 2 seasons, I think you could reasonably assume the next 4 years to look something like 4, 3.5, 2.5, 1.5, 1. That's 12.5 WAR. And I think the Fallies should be very happy if they get sort of production from him. But I wouldn't be optimistic given how quickly pitchers seem to decline in their 30's. Arrieta, for instance, has put up a total of 9 fWAR since turning 30. And his 28/29 seasons were considerably better than Wheeler's.

Now all we need major moves wise is to add a damn 3B!
Haven't read through all this, but is there a LH 3b platoon partner for Riley/camargo perhaps?
ETA... if so, go get ozuna
I expect the Phillies to sign Donaldson. They seem to be cannibalizing NL East teams with their stupid money.

I really love Wheeler and his potential but this is pretty awful for the Phillies. They're going to be in cap hell soon, with a ****ty farm system to boot. They better go all-in now and grab another elite bat and some more depth.
LMAO:
#WhiteSox’s offer to Wheeler was for MORE than the $118M he will receive from the #Phillies, sources tell The Athletic. As
@MarcCarig
said, Wheeler’s wife is from New Jersey, and that proximity was an important consideration in his decision.
Neck was terrible last year and is a year older and Ender who knows. I see Acuna being our only reliable OF’er again next year. Personally Neck should be a bench bat and nothing else at this point bc he’s just not a starter at anymore. If they can resign JD then a cheaper option like Haniger needs to be brought in.
