Yeah I wasn't trying to suggest that going on a 9 series losing streak isn't super unlucky. That's actually exactly what I was getting at. That top tier teams can and do lose very often in the postseason as a result of the high variance nature of baseball. Sometimes it leads to really bad rolls of the dice.

The best way to win a championship is to build a roster capable of long term regular season success and then cross your fingers, tuck your wiener, and pray that the dice rolls your way. Its not ALL a result of luck. But the margins between the best playoff team and the worst is very very small.

Walker makes sense. Sanchez made sense. Lots of fliers make sense. This one is a waste.

No thanks - if the two are "comparable", you would have wasted $8 million on Julio.

$1 million (if and only if in Felix' case) a veteran SP wins the 5th spot coming out of camp is more than enough to gamble on that spot - some combination of Newk, Wright. Wilson, Touki, Anderson, etc. is much more likely to outperform Hernandez or Teheran in 2020, so spending more money than that would have been pretty wasteful. Julio wasn't about to accept a minor league deal with a chance to make the roster, so keeping him would have pretty much guaranteed that Snitker wouldn't have bothered to look at the kids.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Can't possibly hurt a thing - he's being brought in as someone for the kids to learn anything they can from and to guarantee that they aren't complacent next month because they know one of the youngsters is going to win the last spot no matter what.

A little extra competition never hurt anybody. Chances are pretty good that they release him before the season starts, so he'll never even see that $1 million - he'll make meal money and pocket change for teaching a little for a few weeks. If you think of him as a part of the instructional staff, what you're going to pay him for 3-4 weeks isn't a bad investment.

Would be interesting to find out how much they pay Chipper, Andruw, and others over the years for doing essentially the same thing.

What if he rebounds like Sanchez? Then you can anchor your staff and possibly loosen a few more excess prospect to trade.

Please please don't confuse me with DOB. LOL

Sanchez had smarts, humility, and impeccable command. Felix lacks all three. I've been watching him up close for eight years. He's done.

Dude... if he makes the roster he gets a million dollars... if he doesn't, he gets a minor league contract making peanuts or is off the team. If he doesn't perform he doesn't get any money... if he does perform, he gets a million dollars... how is this a waste of any resources?

I'm not going to get too worked up over it, but the Felix signing is not "no risk." There's a very real risk - he wins a rotation spot, then he's god-awful and gets his head kicked in for a month or so and we lose his starts. Which is a problem when you're trying to win the division and it projects to be really close. Games in April count just as much as games in September.

Rockies say Nolan is off the table and he responded: “There’s a lot of disrespect from people there that I don’t want to be a part of,” Arenado said in a text. “You can quote that.”

    Damn. He wants out.

Rockies GM came out today and said that Arenado won’t be traded. Arenado responded and is not happy to say the least.

Says there is a lot of disrespect in Colorado

Our brains are so cash-obsessed that “no risk” casually means “no financial risk (if he’s terrible in March)”. But you’re right: there is real risk, both fiscal (albeit small) and wins-wise, if he looks “good” in near-meaningless ST innings, but is ultimately the same pitcher he’s been since 2017.

Would’ve preferred Taijuan Walker as an upside play—both because there’s likely more upside, and because he doesn’t have a name that can cloud judgments.
"For all his tattooings he was on the whole a clean, comely looking cannibal."

Passan- This has a chance to get very ugly.

It's becoming increasingly clear Nolan Arenado wants out of Colorado. Which could take away the leverage the Rockies might have had in trade talks before Arenado went public.

This is beginning to resemble the Giancarlo Stanton mess in Miami.

The Arenado thing is gonna get ugly. With several teams needing 3b help it’d be smart for Colorado to be reasonable and try to work a deal with somebody.
