There probably isn't a significant difference if you're comparing full season numbers other than the fact that Ray is left-handed AND has definitively better stuff. Ray's 2019 XWOBA was .319, Julio's was .324. If you're looking for one of them to potentially start a playoff game, I'd certainly lean towards Ray's career 11.09 K/9 over Julio's 7.84 though.

Julio's a smoke-and-mirrors guy who has always been pretty lucky and outpitches his peripherals - Ray is a big time strikeout guy who is prone to giving up HRs. One problem is that Julio's luck is likely to decline - the other would be the acquisition cost for Ray. The charts still value Riley highly, but Arizona isn't likely going to give up their Opening Day SP, All-Star 3B, and an OF that has a strong history of being productive for Riley and filler (even pretty good filler) even if they admitted to being in rebuild mode. Maybe they'd take back Duvall as part of the deal as a placeholder that would save them $5 million of what Peralta is expected to make, but he wouldn't be valued as anything more than just that - a placeholder.

Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Id look at bringing Cervelli back as the backup, and maybe declining the Flowers option if Grandal were in play.

One hard foul off the mask and Cervelli may be done. How much is the risk worth?

IDK but seems to me the $3 or $4M that Cervelli would want and may not be insurable is considerable risk to any team pushing budget.

I don’t see the point in letting Julio walk only to replace him with another #4 that must be pried away from another team.

If they let Julio walk it should be done with the intention of acquiring a clear upgrade either via trade or FA, and then having the group of non-QO SPs on the FA market as a backup plan.

Plan A for position players should be Grandal on a 1-2 year deal, Mous or the best 3b they can afford, and the best RHH OFer on a 1-2 year deal they can afford.

If they fail to land Grandal, check down to a C like Avila, get Mous, and use the extra funds to get an even better OFer.

JT eats innings and at 11 million isn’t terrible. If you can’t upgrade his rotation spot then just leave it alone. AA will have to get a big bat to hit behind Freddie and better hitters to lengthen the lineup. Grandal, JD, and Moose are all real options. If AA can work it so he can have Grandal AND Moose instead of JD then that has to be the move. I’d check in on Haniger again to see if he’s available and what it may cost. If Moose and JD both sign elsewhere then I’d look to upgrade COF big with say Marte and have Grandal at C, and throw Riley at 3b.

Thing about Julio...he usually follows a good year with a pretty bad one. I would pick up the option only if I intended moving him in a package.

I feel we will sign a Bumgarner level pitcher. So we would already have four starters with the five spot open (and it should be), for the pitcher chosen the keeper out of the Wright, Wilson, Touki, Weigel batch. Then mid year Anderson or Muller could be up.

I could see it in a shallow catcher market. I wouldn't hate it if we rolled with Cervilli and Flowers in 2020, though that's certainly not optimal.

Braves have serious issues at 3b and 2 corner outfield spots. I'd want those answered before I worry about catcher. Flowers is a good player.

What does the FO think of him? He didn’t start a playoff game and had what 1 ab? Mac was gassed and they still kept running him out there.

Yeah that was pretty dumb. I have a feeling that was on Snit. He knew Mac was going to retire and he's known him since his minor league days.

They generally related McCann starting to us facing right handed pitchers. I agree that Flowers is fine. But then again Riley and Camargo at third probably would put up a similar WAR as what we'd get out of catcher. And we really only have one weak outfield corner (assuming Inciarte is back) and two top prospect outfielders coming with Muk, Duvall, Riley, etc as options.

So when you put all that together, I guess we can go after Grandal, Donaldson, or a corner outfielder, whichever is likely to give us the most bang for the buck. But it would still be nice to get a stronger left hand hitting 3B option if we miss on Donaldson.

No surprise here, MooseTacos and Grandal both declined their mutual options with the Brewers to become free agents
