It will be interesting how quickly they decide to rebuild. It’s a healthy combination of short term win now players like Max, Corbin and Scherzer, and young elite talent like Soto, Robles and Keiboom. If they manage it right they may be able to bridge contention windows well if they are willing to trade these starting pitchers.
Stras, Corbin and Scherzer won't have any surplus value in 3 years. The Nats are in win now mode.

Keep in mind the Nats offered Rendon 7 yrs / 200 million while they still had Stras on the books for 4 yrs / 100 million which was prior to the World Series revenue (that’s ~50-55 million per year)

Donaldson at $25 million and Stras at $35 is close to that same commitment. It also aligns with the reporting that the Nats view JD as their primary Rendon back up plan.

Which is exactly the reason they'll focus on Donaldson - they'll have to give Soto a mega-deal long before a Rendon contract will be up.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

If Nats cant keep Rendon, not sure they'll get JD. Who knows though. Nats are in win now mode so i could see it i guess.

The #Nats are deferring more than $80 million of Strasburg's $245 million contract.
Sorry for the Ignorant question, but how is deferred money handled? And what is the benefit?

What we don't know about the 7/200 offer to Rendon is how much the deal was back loaded. Wasn't around a third of the offer to Harper deferred?

The 80 million or whatever it is will be spread out over a later date. So if 80 million is deferred then his 7 year deal is worth 165 million or 23.5 per year. He then will get paid the rest of his money likely after he is retired at some point.

The benefits are to the team. They pay less per year now so they can keep payroll down and they will pay the 80 million in the future when it's worth less than it is now due to inflation.

The only benefit I can see to the player is if they can negotiate more in total than they would get without any deferrals. And with Stras' history that's likely what happened here.

Corbin and Scherzer will be off the books before Soto is a free agent. I think the Gnats money crunch will be over the next 4 years. Soto will be expensive in arb. Turner will also be pricey.

Except Corbin and Scherzer won’t be off the books, as their deals also included substantial deferred monies.

Nats will be paying Max 15 million per year until 2028 after his deal is done.

No they won't. They are still paying Scherzer and Corbin their deferrals for like 5-10 more years.

I don’t know the exact numbers but I know the first 2 years 2022 and 2023, they owe Max 15 million each year in deferred.

Then in 2024 Corbin goes to 35 million and then in 2025 he is owed 10 million in deferred.

Sounds like the Nats franchise just filed bankruptcy in 2025 instead. Hang em with it.

Well yes that’s possible but hypothetically they can do the same with JD.

Cubs have had talks with Phils on Bryant . Nothing there at the moment. Service time grievance still an issue .

This is so on par with the Phillies. Still, would definitely make more a great lineup in Philadephia.

It would suck to see Washington get JD and the Phillies get Bryant. AA I’m sure has had talks with everybody and knows how much everything is he’s just deciding which way to go.

Wonder what bullets the Phils have left to get Bryant. They also don’t need another short term deal that leaves another big hole. They are having to spend a lot in FA to fill in around the talent they shipped or busted. jTR is going to cost them next year. Man that team is going to be a bigger mess than the ganats.
