Porcello is an interesting name. I'd be interested in seeing how much for Aaron Sanchez.

Same; I’m actually more interested in the latter.

Hamels was a three WAR pitcher last year in just 140 innings. Once you get to his age, nagging injuries that sap 40-50 innings from your yearly total are more expected than fluky, so obviously you can't pencil him in for 190 innings at the same level of performance. But this is a smart move on its own merits and looks even better in comparison to four years and $100 million+ for Bumgarner.

yep. this is why another depth move like Porcello or someone similar makes a lot of sense.

There’s also some marginal upside for 2021—in the event Hamels pitches well enough in 2020 to once again deserve $18 million—since he’ll be eligible for a QO.

Ew. I'd be interested in Porcello because he hs a few decent pitches to work with, Aaron Sanchez is a curve and literally nothing else of merit.

I just saw how good he was last season before injury struck. When healthy he can spot his fastball where he wants it so he and Flowers should work well together. If Hamels can just stay relatively healthy now then I like the deal.

The entire pitching staff is something to be excited about. We have quality and depth.

Now we need some freaking hitters.

    And a new manager.

I really wanted MadBum but am really happy with the 1 year commitment to a very good pitcher.

AA has done such a fantastic job as GM. We are very lucky to have him.
Hindsight is 20/20 and overall I like what AA is doing but it looks like we should have just kept Sanchez when you look at his deal compared to what we gave DK and now Hamels.

Well I think Porcello likely prices himself outside the range I'm comfortable giving for a reclamation project. Bringing in Tijuan Walker, Drew Smyly, or Michael Wacha for around 4-5 million or less is more along the lines of what I'm thinking.

This is a fair point. I know some had Sanchez repeating his 2018 performance but it wasnt a sure thing.

Agreed. I only named Porcello because he was listed in the post to which I was responding. I’d love to see them take a flier on Taijaun Walker, in particular.

Given Sanchez's age, declining skills, and our payroll restraints, it's hard to justify giving Sanchez that sort of money off of 140 innings in 2018. He was brutally awful the prior 3 seasons.

It’s Meh for me IF this is our only move for a starter. Hamels should eat innings and be fine, but he isn’t that difference maker and 18 mil seems like a lot for Cole even on a one year.

It should be expected with Fried and Soroka’s injury history, that one could miss some time next year.

So we would be counting on Fried and Soroka to stay healthy, Hamels to not get hurt or run out of gas and Folty to mentally keep it together ...and Newk or a young guy to take a step.

All of that is totally possible I guess, but I still think AA will trade for another starter....or this group is at best the same as last years bunch.

If they are truely going all in....this won’t be the only move. AA almost has to make a trade with the log jam of pitchers we have.
