Shutdown orders prevented about 60 million novel coronavirus infections in the United States and 285 million in China, according to a research study published Monday that examined how stay-at-home orders and other restrictions limited the spread of the contagion.

A separate study from epidemiologists at Imperial College London estimated the shutdowns saved about 3.1 million lives in 11 European countries, including 500,000 in the United Kingdom, and dropped infection rates by an average of 82 percent, sufficient to drive the contagion well below epidemic levels.

The two reports, published simultaneously Monday in the journal Nature, used completely different methods to reach similar conclusions. They suggest that the aggressive and unprecedented shutdowns, which caused massive economic disruptions and job losses, were effective at halting the exponential spread of the novel coronavirus.

I'm going to have to disagree with the other conservatives here. I just can't see how Sweden and how they handled the coronavirus was a success.

Sweden (along with Brazil and a few other countries) provide natural experiments to estimate the effects of spontaneous actions by the population and/or soft lockdown policies relative to hard lockdowns.

In the case of Sweden compared to its Scandinavian neighbors (who went with hard lockdown policies) the number of deaths per capita is more than 10 times higher.

That multiple of 10 is something to keep in mind.

I think there is still a fair amount of research to be done in teasing out the exact contributions of spontaneous actions versus government mandated lockdowns. The authors of the first study acknowledge this.

They note that "It is also possible that changing public knowledge during the period of our study affects our results. If individuals alter behavior in response to new information unrelated to anti-contagion policies, such as seeking out online resources, this could alter the growth rate of infections and thus affect our estimates. If increasing availability of information reduces infection growth rates, it would cause us to overstate the effectiveness of anti-contagion policies."

I think this question is going to get researched quite a bit.

But for now we can point to the contrast between Sweden and its neighbors. Presumably the Swedes were keeping up with the news in the same way as their neighbors and spontaneously adopted similar changes in behavior. But we shouldn't assume that. This issue needs to be looked at very carefully. It could be that the Swedish media covered the story a bit differently (perhaps influenced by what the government was saying and doing).

Sweden looks like they were wrong at the moment for sure. I do think it's still too early the spike the ball just yet though... hell, the falcons looked like super bowl champs at 28-3, but you know.

    The Nordic Saga ain't over.

But I think a multiple of 10+ in deaths (which is getting bigger every day since no one is dying in the other countries) is going to be hard to make up in the second half.

From an economic perspective, Norway, FINLAND and Denmark are reopening. They will enjoy a tourist season of sorts. No one is going TO Sweden this summer. And no one wants tourists FROM Sweden.

I know of some Swedes who are planning to relocate to Denmark and telecommute to their jobs in Sweden. Seems a little extreme, but that's what some people are doing.

Haven't you learned? CCP information is only to be trusted when it matches up with thethe's viewpoint.

The Swede model is based on a calculated risk that the 2nd outbreak will be worse than the 1st, and they'll be more prepared to deal with it. It has merits, but we're closer to everyday to a vaccine/drug treatment.

Some countries are showing you don't have to wait for a vaccine. New Zealand seems to be entirely free of it. FINLAND hasn't had a death in days. China, with its massive population, basically suppressed it.

Good old china and their lokdown at the tip of a gun.

New Zealand had little virus to begin with which makes it easier to contain with a lockdown scenario.

    Panic paper.

Amusing its so easy to see their tactics. Noard favorite Berenson thoroughly debunks this nonsense.
