I'd love to believe it. I really would. But its the WHO.

I'm more or less just posting for the hypocrisy.

It's certainly possible, though smaller countries have an easier route to make that happen. Not sure I would use China as a shining example of how to deal with the virus.

One would hope these orgs and models can eventually retroactively get things right.

Especially when they are suddenly losing massive funding

If the asymptomatic can't spread it, what's the R0 considering articles like this?

These are political organizations. Not science.

The timing of this release is very curious.

For one, no one said asymptomatic people "can't spread it." It's important to understand what exactly is being said here.

Secondly, regarding your article, I think it's pretty clear that people living in close quarters who weren't practicing social distancing for the 1st 8 days of the trip is likely not a great example of how it transmits in normal settings.

Well I hope they're right. I'm ready to get back to normal sooner rather than later. I'm skeptical of anything coming from the WHO though.

I am skeptical of basically everything, as my parents always raised me to believe half of what I see and even less of what I hear. Still, I put a bit more weight into studies and articles that are peer reviewed and supported by many health experts.

I think this spokesperson for the WHO was a bit imprecise in discussing asymptomatic contagion. There are two other categories, pre-symptomatic and mildly symptomatic, that can present as asymptomatic for a while. She was a bit imprecise to be generous about that. Also I'm surprised at the claim generally that asymptomatic people are not contagious. Certainly there is no research consensus on this. When the WHO takes a position on something like that, it should be on the basis of a pretty strong consensus among the people doing the research.

And now the WHO has to clarify.

    Do these experts know anything?

Memorial Day likely caused more of an increase than anything else. We saw a spike in cases after Easter as well when everyone was already quarantined.
