That would be a relevant observation if the whole population of the earth had it since November. Obviously it spreads from place to place... But yes, the strain is the real crisis issue.
If its rate of growth in coronavirus cases continues, the New York City metropolitan area will suffer a more severe outbreak than those experienced in Wuhan, China, or the Lombardy region of Italy.
There is no guarantee, of course, that current trends will continue. What has happened to this point can't be used to predict what will happen next. It is possible that social distancing will soon slow or arrest the growth of cases.
But what can be said is that the New York metro area has had less success in flattening the curve, at this point in its outbreak, than Wuhan or the Lombardy region did at the same point in theirs. And some other American metropolitan areas appear to be on a similar path.

I don't think things will get as bad in NY as in Lombardy. While the city has not had as much success in flattening the curve, it has better prepared itself in terms of ventilators and other aspects of capacity that have worked against Lombardy.
The graph at the bottom of article on growth rates at given case counts is a good way of comparing the situation across different regions. I would prefer a similar graph for fatalities, since that is not affected by how aggressively testing is being conducted.

Trump is taking a lot of criticism for the botched initial response (rightfully so, it was terrible).
Interesting that state and local governments aren’t drawing the same criticism.
Trump said he knew it was a pandemic long before anyone else called it a pandemic.

States shouldn't have to bid against each other and against the Fed govt for supplies. A fair price should be set by the govt and orders sent out based on urgency and need. The bidding is a waste of time.
