Looking at Japan's data on worldometers, they have only tested 6937 per million. That's really low. For reference, we've tested 185803 per million. Bc of the rising cases and low testing levels, I wouldn't be surprised if their outbreak is larger than the numbers appear.

and ask what can we learn from such a comparison

I can imagine this discussion taking place on these boards in the not-so-distant future. Vaccines don't work. We've seen a 700% spike in cases in country X where vaccines are being used. Meanwhile in country Y cases are falling. Never mind that country Y has seen half its population die. Its cases are falling. And they are rising in country X. So vaccines don't work!

that's a pretty reasonable take...and it has nothing to do with masks...i'm sure wearing a mask is helping to hold down the spread...it could be that mask wearing is down in Hawaii, which might be a factor behind the spike...but we both know with 100% certainty that wearing a mask is helping...in Hawaii and everywhere else...but for some reason you think the fact that cases are rising in Hawaii and Japan in some way is helping you make a case against wearing a mask...that logic is so incredibly weak that it really deserves a hashtag

I understand the logic with masks and am on board with slowing spread for symptomatic individuals.

I dont see what hugh frequency testing does. Lovkdowns should not be nor should they ever be an option.
