Herd immunity in general for a coronavirus is not smart. There are already reports of reinfection popping up across the world.

So a vaccine won't work, then?

Has herd immunity ever been achieved for any virus infecting humans without a vaccine?

Well we don't have any vaccines for existing coronaviruses but there has never been this type of effort put into finding one either.

I'm obviously no expert in the field so I can't tell you what kind of difference in effectiveness there is in a man-made vaccine vs what our bodies create after contracting the virus. With this being a novel virus there is still a ton we don't understand about it.

But I'm not expecting some cure-all vaccine within the next 6 months or anything, let's put it that way.

YEs it is, because as I said, there's at least one bill in the Senate, maybe 2, I can't remember, that were passed by the house.

That's what the experts have been saying. If there is a vaccine it will be only partially effective and a lot of people will still be getting sick. Better than nothing, but we still are going to need to have a plan for controlling its spread.

In the end I think covid-19 will end up like seasonal flu. You can get yearly vaccines that will be partially effective but not complete and the virus' mortality rate will be diminished.

I don't think it's going away and something we will just have to deal with it.

We're learning. Therapeutics are improving. We are finding low-cost ways to reduce spread.

My point is it's not really the policy. The policy is to do nothing. Herd immunity just came along for them to attach their incompetence to.

Yeah. Underneath it all is a lack of management chops. It has been covered by a veneer of ideology and PR. But fundamentally, it is a failure of competence.

But there is also a fairly deep ideological issue. A significant part of the GOP has always viewed government competence as some kind of threat. If it is competent at improving our lives, maybe we will turn to it more. Horrors. So there has been an investment of sorts in the idea that a competent government response to any problem is a bad thing. Which has led to the present situation.

I assume you agree then that Spain, Italy, and any country within the ballpark of US is unquestionably failed leadership?

I think it is no accident Germany and Canada have had the best results. Of our peer group countries, they have had people at the helm who are serious, competent leaders.

Italy and Spain have been in a political shambles for a while. Anyone paying attention knows that. Boris Johnson is a lot smarter than very poorly chosen one, but is a deeply flawed leader. And this has hurt the UK's response.

France is in between those two groups. And their results so far (judging by deaths per capita) are intermediate as well.

And there is the United States, currently saved from last place by Spain. But I don't think we are not gonna let them keep that distinction.

I just want to ensure they all are declared incompetent.

Curious, how does US stack up when we remove the failed leadership of Cuomo and Murphy? (I believe you described them as the model)

They are indeed the model for killing the most people and the most jobs

France sets new record today with 30,621 cases. This is 469 per million. 469 per million in the US would be 154,700. The US record so far is 78,936, so 1.96x worse than our worse day.

Italy sets new record today with 8,804 cases. This breaks yesterday's new record of 7,331, so the record increased 20.1%.

Depends on the volatility of mutations with COVID. Influenza constantly mutates, making a "cure" basically impossible.

I'm not a fan of Cuomo's but I find it weird you don't consider the population density of NY City and NJ when discussing these matters. But then you are the one who keeps bumping that graph from Sweden that cuts off on April 10. So we all know what your contribution around here is all about.

Hmmm, I wonder why you left out certain data and went with cases. I havent looked it up but you have the credibility of thethe so I assume the deaths are much worse in US than France by rate which is why you went with cases instead of deaths.

Do the countries you post with glee has doing "better" have cities like NYC?

Fact is your hero Cuomo made policies that killed people. He also made policies that wrecked his economy. He is a disaster.

The rest of the country is doing just fine.

Sweden reported 0 deaths yesterday, by the way
