obesity is a factor in covid mortality but not THE factor...here is America's obesity map...just eyeballing it, i'd say obesity rates by state are only weakly correlated with covid mortality rates...some of our "skinniest" states have had the worst covid outcomes

What could ever explain the higher mortality rates in those northeast states despite lower obesity rates?

If you compare results across Canadian provinces, again there is at best a weak correlation between obesity and covid death rates. Any accounting for the difference in obesity in the US and Canada would not explain away the big difference in Canadian and American covid death results. Btw the data suggest Canadians are pretty fat. Maybe not Mississippi or West Virginia fat but a country of Twiggies they aint.

Results are bad too. Our deaths per capita are way above peer groups: EU, Canada, Japan. We have almost 3 times the death per capita rate as Canada, in spite of Canada being slightly more urbanized and being at a more northerly latitude. You can take NY city out of our results if you want and the rest of the country has done way worse than Canada.

But what happens when you remove the mass murderers in the northeast from the equation?

New York and NJ doesn't listen to a word Trump says. Their failures are on their own incompetence and really fatten up the US numbers.

These companies have huge amounts of reputation on the line. If the vaccines fall on their faces, these companies will lose way more than they will have gained by selling doses of the vaccines. A commonsensical observation: our obesity rate is NOT 3 times Canada's. It is NOT 2 times. It is higher but NOT an order of magnitude higher. So it is unlikely to be more than a fraction of the explanation for why covid death rates are 3 times higher here than in Canada.
