Interesting read.
As it turns out we are running a pretty interesting controlled experiment at the moment. The United States has reopened without meeting many of the criteria set by the White House itself.
We have a peer group of countries in Europe (Italy, Spain, Germany, France and the UK) that put off reopening until the virus' reproductive rate was brought to a much lower level. And at least in some cases they are implementing more comprehensive programs to test and trace.
The combined population of Italy, Spain, Germany, France and the UK is about the same as the United States. Right now they have suffered significantly more COVID deaths than we have. I am pretty confident the situation will be reversed by the end of this year.
We can also compare economic outcomes by year end.

Right now Italy, Spain, Germany, France and the UK are at 136,000 deaths. The United States is at 100,000.
By the end of September, we will have overtaken them. Easily.
And by and large this will reflect policy choices we are making. In some cases policy choices we are stumbling into without thinking much about them.

Yes. Those countries come closest to being our peer group. Together they have the same population we have. So far they have suffered 135,000 COVID deaths to our 100,000. I think we are going to be well above them by the end of the year.
Edit: The 135,000 includes Italy. Combined, Italy, Spain, France, the UK and Germany have the same population we do.

“They don’t have a right to object. That is the rule and that is the regulation and they have to comply with that,” Cuomo said during his daily briefing in Albany.
