Can someone please explain to me why the media was championing the 'false hope' narrative originally?

Because may be more research needs to be done before we start claiming something as miracle drug? It's fantastic that there have seen some encouraging results so far. But there is a reason we do clinical trials. Even Fauci warned that there was only anecdotal evidence that it could be helpful.

Just like the French doc who said not to take acetaminophen and people started spreading that rumor like wildfire, despite a bunch of other doctors claiming there was nowhere near enough evidence to make such a claim.

It is, in fact, dangerous to push a drug like hydroxychloroquine as some sort of miracle drug when there is so little data available on it's treatment of COVID-19. You absolutely run the risk of giving people false hope and at the same time potentially affect the availability of the drug to people that actually need it.

You take something that is um "aspirational" to coin a phrase and present it to the public as a done deal. It is certainly misleading. And should be covered as such. Giving false hope can also be dangerous. It is difficult to cover the potential damage from giving false and misleading information. But it should be covered. Other presidents have been held to task for it. I seem to remember a former president declaring "mission accomplished" a tad early. That could also be filed under "aspirational" I suppose.
