Its so strange really. Something big must have happened that changed the trajectory of the infection curve. Did people randomly change their social patterns in the past month to an extreme side?

There are several reasons we are seeing what we are seeing, not just one.

You know, fear exists for a good reason. I don't think you should be afraid of everything, and I personally have very few fears, but fear itself can be the difference between surviving and not surviving.

Also most people are being responsible and doing the right thing not because they are afraid or doing it for themselves, but because it is socially responsible. Mask up and pick up your dog poop everyone.

I've felt that getting everyone on board on a voluntary basis is the way to go. But I've never been under illusions as to how hard this would be. When you have externalities (and an infectious disease is exhibit A for externalities) it is very hard for individuals to internalize the external costs of their behavior. The only chance we've had is strong consistent messaging and modeling of good behavior by people in a position to influence such behavior. Sadly, we've lacked this consistent leadership and modeling of good behavior. And of course there have been other failings of society and leadership.

Its going to upset them more when it only increases by a fraction of what we saw a month ago. The last week and upcoming week is their last chance to influence policy. Republican governors need to trust the science and stay strong.
