Matters of fact (points unacceptable to disagree):
- Wearing masks prevents the spread of disease, as proven by medical professionals for decades/centuries.
- Wearing masks is not harmful to your health, as proven by medical professionals for decades/centuries.
- Mandating the public wear masks is, by definition, an act of government to limit personal freedom.
Matters of opinion (points acceptable to disagree):
- Some folks think the government should not infringe on any personal freedoms, including wearing masks.
- Some folks think the general population should not be protecting the vulnerable population, who should be isolated instead.
So...
If you see someone arguing a point of fact, you can safely ignore them as an idiot. Don't even bother to correct their incorrect information because it won't matter...they have already drank the orange kool aid.
If you see someone arguing a point of opinion, you can engage with them in healthy debate. I suggest pointing out the laughable hypocrisy in their points of view...after explaining to them what hypocrisy is.

A simple understanding of disease transmission is all folks needed to understand that masks prevent infected people from spreading disease, and don't do much to prevent healthy folks from contracting disease. Doctors wear masks to prevent spreading their germs to patients, not the other way around. This has been the case literally for decades/centuries.
Nobody with two brain cells to rub together stated differently...ever.
So back when officials didn't know when folks were contagious, they couldn't recommend the general public wear masks. Now that we understand infected people are contagious several days before they show symptoms (the definition of asymptomatic), they recommend even "healthy" people wear them in case they are unknowingly infected.
Science is funny that way...changing opinion as new data comes along. Hard for trumpkin boomers to grasp, I know...but try.

A close friend of mine has been waiting tables the last few weeks since Georgia re-opened to full capacity in restaurants.
She's been wearing a mask everyday and running around, telling me how hard they are to breathe in. She went to a table to take an order, with her mask pulled down to her chin so she could breathe for a bit. This older lady, who wasn't even wearing a mask herself, chastized my co-worker for not wearing her mask.
The level of entitlement from people is absurd, but then again they're the same people who have managed to to turn wearing a mask into a political fight.

My wife was in a local grocery store with her mask on when a nut case came stomping in and proceeded to scream at employees for wearing masks telling them that they were harming themselves and should take them off "right now!" Smh.
Restaurants are closing to protect their employees from abuse. Madness.

Japan doesn't fetishize the notion of freedom. It has a long, long history and there's a sense of quiet fortitude and a willingness to endure suffering for the sake of the collective. I've come to see them as a very wise and compassionate people. 30 years ago I had a very different perspective.

The Western mindset is biting us in the arse. It can inspire greatness but it also can be destructive in its self-centered forms.
The polling has shown quiet but strong support for being cautious about reopening, consistent with advice of Fauci and other experts. The states that opened without meeting the benchmarks did so contrary to public opinion and expert advice. Waiting two or three extra weeks to reopen would have made a yuge difference. People were getting tired and restless but this could have been managed. Like in Michigan, where the governor refused to be intimidated.
