So with the Dodger$ having this outbreak and JT knowing he was positive but still went out and made intentional contact with others. But MLB is still not punishing him. Who knows how many people he has now infected. I just can’t believe mlb won’t do anything about that behavior.

I would say the same thing if it was FF. Sports are already hanging in balance with the new administration already saying they are thinking of shutting down sectors where large groups gather. But not self regulating a bubble situation and then not disciplining someone who clearly broke the bubble protocol and then spread the virus even after knowing he was positive is a huge black eye to our sport. Man Fred is a joke and needs to be replaced ASAP.

manfred is going to do nothing confrontational to the union at this time. Not a good time to butt heads with Tony Clark if they want to regain some ground.

Gausman accepted (no ****) the $18.9M qualifying offer from the Giants. 1.5 years after we, quite justifiably, fired him.

I wonder if both the Mets and Giants thought through the whole QO issue. I have no inside information as to how the market will unfold, but I don't think there was any way that either Stroman or Gausman was going to get an AAV of almost $19 MM and I don't see a lot of lucrative multi-year deals out there for guys in that particular strata of players.

Stroman may not get the AAV of from anyone else, but he absolutely gets a multi-year offer somewhere else and for much more than 19 million in total value. Low risk play for the Mets. Either he accepts and you get a 3+ WAR pitcher for 1 year @ 19 million, or he declines and you stand to get a comp pick.

Offering Gausman was definitely odd. But again, if you really want the guy back but also don't want to be saddled with the risk of long term deal, offering the QO does make some sense.

At $19M? Good lord. They could have had him for half that. I'm thinking 59 good innings doesn't eclipse seven years of mediocrity.

With the future of the game's finances up in the air, I don't think anyone turns down $19 MM for one season and I doubt a lot of teams would be willing to go three years on most anyone. It's going to be a very odd off-season.

There's a fairly decent chance he gets a 2 year deal somewhere else. Don't let his 2019 cloud your judgement. He was every bit a solid mid to back end rotation pitcher from 2014-2018. Again, not saying I agree with San Fran's decision here. Personally, even if he landed a 2-3 year deal (which isn't super likely, imo) I can't imagine it would be for more than 10-11 million in AAV.

I was just offering up some clarity on why they might have done it. If you like Gausman but don't want to commit multiple years to him or want to risk getting out bid on a multi year deal, then this is the avenue you're likely to take.

It's kinda sad we got crap-ass Gausman in 2019, even though he helped us in 2018. But yeah, 19mil for Gausman is alot considering you're not sure which one is going show up from year to year.

Yikes. Should the Phillies try to trade some guys to start over then. Could they trade Harper. I assume someone would take him. Could get a good haul for Nola. Could probably get wheeler off the books too. Maybe not for much return.

Would Harper have any trade value at all? I’d think not

Bryce’s contract is much worse, with him being a worse player. His contract is going to be a lot harder to move.

Nolan is 29 and has 6 years 199 million remaining.

Bryce is 28 and has 11 years 274 million remaining.

The only thing Bryce has on Arenado is his AAV. But 11 years and 274 is going to be next to impossible to move, especially considering the level of offense Bryce produces. It’s not like he’s Trout.

Good luck to the Phils trying to move that. I wonder how much they’d realistically have to eat in order to move him?

agreed. i meant "same" as in Harper, like Arenado, has no trade value because of it.
Harper's value is further negative tho, you're right.

If the Phillies were maintaining payroll they would be in a semi-contention spot.

If they're cutting dollars, they should just go ahead and rebuild.

I think Harper's annual salary is completely reasonable for a long while. Probably at least 5 years there of good value. Should be able to move it.
