    DOB:

#Braves think they can save $ on Shuster below slot, use that to pay more for potential good HS talent that slips past 2nd round tomorrow, make up gap for no 2nd-round pick. Shuster made an adjustment with hip-turn that improved velo & command. 92-95 FB, good feel for change-up

The only way this makes sense is if this is AA saving to go overslot later. I don't like that strategy but at least it's a strategy. I feel it's a great way to get a lot of okay but few great players.

Only thing i'll say is Braves have the 3rd least amount of money to sign picks, had to get creative. But i would have gone elsewhere, but he does seem to be rising as a prospect.

Not sure how to read this, but the extremely-too-early returns of his first properly-in-control draft have been quite good. Shuster seems like an uninspiring pick on the surface, but the Braves still have three more picks and the UDFA pool, so if you meant that Anthopoulos himself was "flummoxed", I think that's pretty damn premature.

Yep. With no second rounder this is a very, very weird pick.

Why does it matter? How many close-to-the-bigs relievers does the organization need???
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Seriously. Another two pitch pitcher with little upside.

I'm completely flummoxed, not AA. If you're going to draft a RP profile guy to save money, why not at least draft one with big-time stuff? Mlodzinski was out there. Henry, Beeter, Carraway. WAY more upside.

once again i will say to wait until the players play before declaring anything about their future. do we have to go through “no position Shewmake” again? that was obliterated as soon as he started actually playing? let’s see the guys play and see how the rest of the draft goes. we especially have very little information this year, why pretend?

I'd say that's because, for better or worse, they don't think he profiles as a reliever.

And, given his profile, I think that's correct: either the control improvements and/or added velocity are real, and the breaking-ball is teachable/improveable, making Shuster a viable mid-rotation starter; or, one or more of those things don't happen, and he's Matt Wisler.

Unfortunately the one you're describing was a HS kid.

Has been a while since Winston Salem was a cold weather area.

Well, the Braves don't think he's a reliever for one... Kiley had him at 31... its a reach and its not exciting, but depending on how the rest of the draft goes, it could easily still be a solid pick.

I dont think they took him as a RP reading up on what some people who cover the team are saying.

Not just anywhere in Massachusetts: New Bedford, a whale of a place to start any journey.

Problem is he has so many failure points. If the control improvement isn't real, he's a career minor leaguer. If the breaking ball doesn't develop he's a middle reliever. If the velocity goes back down he probably busts.

He has to hit on every single one and if he does, the upside is a middle of the rotation starter.

Seems like a high risk low reward player.
