I'd say Shuster seems like a high-risk, moderate-reward player. But I also don't think, given his profile, that the Braves selected him thinking he's a likely reliever—which was the contention of some.

I'm also hoping he's a player they've been tracking, and have seen things the other publications haven't. The absurd whiff% he gets on his changeup, plus some of the data on the raw material of his slider, makes me think the Braves feel he could be successful even if he's more 92-94 than 95-97.

My experience with draft scouting reports are that if a guy is said to sit 92-94 and touch 97, expect a guy in the majors that sits 89-92 and touches 94.

Maybe they're thinking he can be a one dominant pitch reliever with that changeup.

If Law and McDaniel both had him 31 or lower and Callis had him in the same range, it's not necessarily a reach.

For real. This isn't the NFL draft. He could be rated 50th on most boards and not be a reach. There isn't much of a gap in talent between the 25th rated player and the 50th rated player. It's mostly just who you prefer.

My biggest problem with this pick is the opportunity cost. It's not like the cupboards were bare and we made the best of it. We passed on some pretty good players to take this guy.

Yeah, MLB draft is a lot different than NBA or NFL. There's a pretty big gap after top 25-35 or so guys for NFL. And NBA there's clearly a select few who are head and shoulders over everyone. MLB after the top 10, everyones pretty much the same.

Fangraphs, Law, McDaniel, and Callis had him around top 35. It's not a major reach. But keep crying.
