There was literally a documentary where Rene Gayo, the Pirates' Latin American guy, was caught on microphone attempting to extort Miguel Sano to sign with the Pirates. Literally everyone was just like "yep, that's how it goes down here." Seems like that was worse that what we did. Don't think anyone got a life ban over that stuff. Coppy just didn't know how to rub elbows.

As many have noted, circa 2020, it's a pretty uninspiring list of players, given the rule-breaking that went into acquiring them, and the ultimate punitive costs of that rule-breaking. I still think not having Bae and Puason in the system hurts—which is what I thought at the time (though I would've included Maitan, who's now probably the biggest bust of the group). But del Rosario, Soto, and Zuniga wouldn't be bad depth, either.

Just have to hope—contra the quoted speculation from BA that "[t]wo years from now, the Braves will likely rank among the bottom third in terms of farm system talent"—that the Braves 2019 draft-strategy pays off dramatically in replenishing the lower minors (alongside whatever strategy they're even able to deploy in forthcoming 2020 fiasco-draft).

It wasn’t really fair, but I’m so glad that punishment came down on the Braves...well, at least the banning Coppy for life part.

The worst punishment would have been MLB mandating that the Braves carry all those signed on the 40 man for 6 years and have to keep the scouting department and all the Johns.

I mean, come on, how inept do you have to be to spend huge amounts of cash, cheat, and still not sign a true ML prospect. You would think a drunken sailor would skin at least fall and skin his knee every once in a while....

    Just stumbled across this...

    https://www.baseballamerica.com/stor...gning-preview/

Not so sure we can make the argument that the penalty was "fair" after MLB decided to go even further this signing period - deciding not to let teams trade pool money. Completely missed that.

Think it's probably fair to wonder if AA and his crowd would have approached things differently and spread the money out to sign multiple kids if they'd have known that signing Tavarez will blow the entire budget.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

If you could summarize this article, that would be great.

Mentions that the initial 50% reduced pool was reduced by $1 million when Ozuna was signed. With this year's pools remaining at 2019 levels, that left us with $1,572,000 to spend PLUS the opportunity to trade that up to $2,515,200. MLB then changed directions in March and decided not to allow anyone to trade for pool money.

Yeferson Tineo was expected to get ~ $1 million, so now it appears he's going to sign with Texas and Tavarez will get the vast majority (if not all) of what we have to spend.

Bumping this because Pipeline just updated their top 30 international prospects for the January signing period. We've been linked to Diego Benitez many other places as well, but this is the only place without a paywall: https://www.mlb.com/prospects/international/.

Pipeline has him as the #10 international prospect.

    Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

Benitez is a toolsy shortstop that has drawn some comparisons to a young Manny Machado.

He’s big -- 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds -- and strong with signs of power now that project to increase as he develops. He can already drive the ball out of the ballpark and hits line drives to all fields with authority. He shows good bat speed and a solid approach at the plate. He should benefit from the daily instruction in a team’s academy once he signs, but there is already a lot to working in his favor.

He’ll have to work on plate discipline and pitch recognition as he advances through the Minor Leagues, but that’s common for all young prospects -- domestic or international. On defense, he shows good footwork, soft hands and a strong arm that has a chance to be plus-plus potential.

There’s also a chance he will be a plus runner.

He trains with Venezuela’s Emiro Barboza, a member of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program. The Braves are the favorite to sign him.

Thanks CJ...I posted about him some time ago and I'm excited about him. The Yankees had him wrapped up but spent too much on another few FA'S and tried to low ball him. Yankees fans were excited about him as well.

Yeah, I remember us talking about him before but couldn't find those threads for some reason.

I posted this video previously, but here's a good look at his swing: https://www.instagram.com/p/CL-iyFTJ...on_share_sheet. Lot to be excited about.

I am excited to be players in the international market again, but after Maitan I have a difficult time getting hyped for any individual player until I see them have success professionally.

Ahh yes, good old pipeline dropping a 55 on a 16 year old and comparing him to Machado.

    Lmao..
Well Maitan was generational if you think about it. Thanks to him and Coppy the Braves got a huge penalty and no else pays international talent under the table or has handshake agreements.

The only generational talent Maitan had was the ability to stuff his face with fast food once he got some coin in his pocket.

I know right...his Twitter feed was full of the fast life. As in fast food!
