NYC metro 1980: 15.601 million
NYC metro 2020: 18.804 million

And I also didn't account for total US population growth since 1980, and I don't care enough to do so. Year to year growth can be seen at https://www.macrotrends.net/cities/2...ity/population

Looking at those numbers, the only major cities to show population decline in any recent years are NYC, Chicago, LA, and Detroit.

In both cases, people leave largely because the cost of living is so high. They can't afford it. So they sadly pack their bags and go elsewhere.

A large part of why the cost of living is so high is the lack of affordable housing. Permitting for new housing is very strict in places like San Francisco. It reflects a sort of I got mine and I'm not interested in sharing mentality (which I don't approve of but would have thought would be an attitude that appeals to some posters around here). The people who got theirs are perfectly ok with the outward migration. That's essentially the dynamic at work. And the rest of the country in some ways benefits from the people who leave California and New York. They are very talented people, just not quite talented enough to make it in California and New York. And they bring their blue voting ways to their new home states. Soon they will help flip Texas and North Carolina in addition to Georgia and Arizona. To say nothing of what has already happened in Colorado and Virginia.

Well I gave you an answer. Obviously not the answer you wanted. I will go back to assuming your questions are rhetorical ones. But my belief is the people who leave California and New York are generally sad to do so, and interested in recreating some of what they left behind in their new home states. That may not square with your ideological presuppositions, but that doesn't mean it aint true.

I have a son who worked in Atlanta for two years. I told him to keep an open mind and enjoy a new culture. But he started plotting his return to California as soon as he got there. Now he is in San Francisco and is very happy to be back in northern California. He is 10 minutes from work and skateboards there. Oh and he is back working in an office environment. He can work from home if he wants to, but enjoys being at the office. He tells me all the restaurants are back. New ones are opening. He'll be going to some Giants games even though he is an Angels fan (I don't know what I did wrong there). He'll probably go to the Coliseum when the Angels are in town.
