Assuming this is about Wainwright? He had a great year but i'd be a little wary relying on him. If the price was reasonable, he'd be good. Morton is who i'd go for though.

I'd be in on Wainwright if he'd be cheap enough. He'd provide a solid veteran to the rotation. Former ace, still decent stuff.

But i'd imagine the Cards will bring him back to finish as a Cardinal

I didn't realize Kluber went down with a shoulder injury.

Paxton went down with a flexor strain...aka the diagnosis before TJ surgery happens 1 month later.

No thanks to either. We already saw Hamels be a waste. Get someone who will be more of a sure bet to actually contribute.

So the Indians had to literally let him go for nothing because they didn't want to pay him either.

If one of the best BP arms in the game isn't worth $10M, what is he worth in this market? $8M? Less?

If Brad Hand is worth $8M, what does that mean significantly lesser BP arms like Melancon and Greene are worth? By definition, less than that. So yes, getting someone like Melancon for $5M or less is perfectly reasonable if Brad Hand isn't worth $10M.

Yeah i dont think people realize how bad the FA market is. Some really good players already getting options declined. MM for 4-5 is very reasonable/possible if Hand wouldnt go for 10 mil for 1 year.

The only players i can see get paid paid are Bauer, Springer, Realmuto, DJLM, maybe Ozuna but he may have hit the worst time to have a career year. But just takes one team i suppose.

I just saw Paxton was cleared and is good to go but he isnt the SP i'd go for to add if i'm AA. After what happened with Hamels last year. Need someone who is reliable/dependable.

And, is anyone a "little" worried with the Mets and Cohen that they could take big advantage of this FA market? With no one spending?

If you need a better understanding of just how poor the market may be this winter and possibly next year as well read Evan Dreilich article in todays Athletic.

I trust AA and in this market he could really set us up to be dangerous next year. K Hernandez for the bench, Joc to platoon with Duval, Ozuna or Cruz (have to have a big bat), and MM and another good bullpen arm, Stroman? No clue if that’s doable but those are our needs and not the most expensive to fix them.

Assuming the ~ $95 million in committed money noted on the payroll spreadsheet (which has us retaining both Camargo and Jackson) I posted is close, a Wainright/Molina package might at least be a little intriguing if they're serious about playing together and Wainright would like to go out at home. Have to wonder about how realistic Molina will be about his salary and splitting time in half given how far his bat has declined - he's probably a SLIGHT (at best) offensive upgrade over Flowers at this point, so it's probably questionable whether it's worth spending any of the limited funds on him.

That said, if you could add Wainright, Molina, and Melancon for around $5 million each you'd still have roughly $10 million to spend on platoon partners for Duvall and Riley and a backup SS/utility guy (and maybe even another pen arm). That could conceivably put you in a position to add Pederson ($8,000,000), someone with more punch than Holt like Asdrubal Cabrera ($2 million), and Freddy Galvis ($2 million) instead of someone like Hechavarria and still come in at right at $120 million.

That kind of lineup would easily blow whatever fuses are left in Snitker's brain with so many switch-hitters and platoon options.

I don't want the Braves to spend half their budget on Wainwright, Molina, and Melancon and then use the rest on platoon players. That would be a horrendous offseason.

    I wouldn't mind Melancon back I guess.
