GDT 4/5/24: Braves vs D-Backs - Home Opener

So I figure if we haven't heard anything by Gametime, it's probably bad news.

Well, Passan said Strider has serious elbow concerns in one of his tweets about Bieber needing TJ. So there's that.

What do we think is behind this uptick in injured arms? Sticky stuff ban? Pitch clock? Like that one team physician was talking about in The Athletic with the advent of pitches like the sweeper and power change? Something else?

Increased velocities as well as the increase in throwing of breaking balls specifically the slider. To throw faster you have to have increased stress on the elbow tendon. Its like a rubber band, if you pull it further its going to break sooner.

Max effort is behind virtually all arm injuries. It’s a violent, unnatural movement for the human body to perform and the current move toward shorter and faster is poison for pitchers.

Combination of things but I think the biggest thing that we've seen over the last decade is that the change in hitters' approach/instruction and the improvement in hitters' physical strength has put increasing reliance on guys to overthrow because just about anything below 95 is going to get tattooed. It's just guys--especially relatively smaller guys of which Strider is one--pushing their limits with high-effort deliveries and putting inordinate amount of stress on their arms.

EDIT: Gov, it looks like we were having basically the same thought at the same time.

On a positive note how about the start by Arcia. Averaging 0.1 WAR per game through 6 games. Leading the team at 0.6 WAR. Fangraphs showing 1.4 defensie WAR or whatever that would be called. He was at 8.3 for the whole season last year so thats significantly better pace than last year so far. MVP of our season so far imo.

Braves will provide an update on Strider at 4 pm. If they’re announcing a time to meet with the press, that means it’s bad.

I feel like as America's team, we should open our arms to Trevor Bauer. As the Statue of Liberty says give us your troubled douches with terrible personal lives... esp if they throw really hard. It's time to do the American thing...

Not expecting good news at all with this. If it's not season ending, i'd consider that a W, but expecting it to be.
