Lots of great candidates lose presidential elections/primaries simply because they don’t resonate with the people. RDS is one of them.
DeSantis would be killing it right now. Trump didn't really perform especially well, but he didn't perform bad. Biden destroyed himself in the debate. Can you imagine if Biden actually had to debate someone articulate, smart, and compelling (like DeSantis) that stuck to policy in debates, instead of just hurling insults and talking about how corrupt Biden is this entire time?
Youngkin doesn’t have the luxury of being in a deep red state and didn’t need trump to get him across the finish line.

He never ran for president and wasn't tested against a large national field.
It would have been the same outcome. Someone like Haley would have won and if Trump never ran Youngkin would have and he would have probably smoked RDS as well.
