What issues have you changed your stance on since first joining scout?

Well, I still hate the Braves, that's for sure :Bunchie1:

I'd say I'm more socially liberal, and maybe more fiscally conservative

I'm less sanguine about the efficacy of American intervention overseas. I'm downright ****ing cynical about the Democratic party's ability to effect meaningful policy changes that improve the lives of the majority of Americans. I'm pessimistic about the American dream. Otherwise, I'm about where 50 is. I don't know that there's any particular issue that I've shifted on, although I've probably missed one.

I will say, FWIW, regarding the forum, that the overall quality of the conservative posters is WAY up.

taxes
purpose of gov't with those taxes
use of military force in the world
2nd amendment issues
role of religion in gov't

off the top of my head

i wouldn't say i changed my views from this board per say. it was more just getting older and seeing more of the globe and how things are done in certain places and the way some live

I was a huge Ron Paul guy when I was in my teens (16-18).

Voted for Obama because I was tired of Republicans in office, and Obama represented a historic change in American politics.

Once I got older and have dealt with real life issues and have seen what it's like to be on the bottom of the barrel and know that many others are going to be stuck there, I grew out of libertarianism to be a progressive. Libertarianism IMO is a fantasy. Could never work especially because it requires those in power and those with the money to make the right decisions on what's best for everyone (essentially a government). If we had unlimited resources, unlimited opportunities, unlimited land and space then yes libertarianism would be perfect. But we don't, and that means we have to be smart about how things are distributed.

Still believe in earning money, still believe in keeping most of your money... my feelings have changed on economics in large part to the greedy corporations and those at the top who are making it miserable for those less fortunate. If that makes me a "socialist" then oh well.

I'm surprised by this, as I've always thought you believed in pretty much things you did then as you do now. Thanks for the reply.

I think sturg's changes are interesting. Neocons and libertarians have literally nothing in common. Neos love spending just in different sectors.

To go from police the world to non intervention is a huge jump.

Like weso, I always have given the complications of foreign policy less credit. It's extremely complex but I still side on cutting down and making our defense efficient. I think liberals want a strong national defense too but the neocons and industrial complex have taken it to never before seen heights of spending.

Our biggest foreign policy issue is oil. Our economy would collapse if oil prices surged again. Definitely why I think gop needs to join dems on transitioning to alternative and renewable asap. Solyndra failed but it's not an excuse to stop investing in alternative methods. That would give us a huge upper hand in foreign policy.

na, hell

I brought Ron Paul to scout cause i use to support that view point 100%

i no longer believe one way is the way. a nice mix of ideas to help better the overall society (which sounds like commie talk in this country in some weird way)

I liked Ron Paul because he was basically trolling the establishment gop at the debates. The things he said sounded wonderful in theory but libertarianism is a pipe dream. He kind of exposed the gop for pretending to be conservatives and he started the entire founding fathers phrase.

Modern Republicans always said Reagan Reagan etc. Then Ron came a long and said this is what the founders intended and then the tea party ran with it too as a way to try to distance from establishment.

Neo-con foreign policy - Initially, I was intrigued by the idea that the best way to defend against the threat of Islamic Jihad was to establish and promote democracy in Muslim countries. I soon, but not soon enough, came to see that as an overly Western and simplistic idea and understanding of Islam. A fools game with horrific costs.

Immigration - my faith has kept pushing me to ditch the Conservative rhetoric on immigration. I am to care for the "sojourner in the land." I also have come to the conclusion that without Latino workers our nation is in a bind. Our replacement population has to be augmented, imho.

Healthcare - not that I advocate ACA, but I have come to the conclusion that we are moving to a single payer system and so I'm not hell-bent on voting for the candidate that's going to repeal ACA. That ain't going to happen. My preference now is for someone who will work toward a system that calls for local, state and national governmental involvement, along with businesses and charities.
