Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

The five years doesn't make alot of sense to me. As you said, what other team would come close to matching this deal? Edman was a 5 WAR player back in 2022, so maybe the Dodgers see something they can unlock. But next year will be his age 30 season. He's a plus defender at multiple positions so at least there's that as a floor.

I think it's an overpay of Edman, but Dodgers have always had a guy like this and Roberts know how to use a player like this. I think the defense angle plays up large. But it is an overpay.

I mean they likely could have gotten Kim at a much cheaper price and he's a significantly better hitter and an equal defender.

The years/per seem okay but the total years is mind-boggling. A guy like Edman is a fine player but easily replaceable. 2 years should've been the max for a guy like that.

Kim can't play the OF. Edman basically takes the place of Taylor and Hernandez. I'm not disagreeing that Edman isn't an overpay. He clearly is. Dodgers always seem to have a true utility guy on the roster and they put a premium on having one.

2 years and 29 million isn't a big deal on the surface, but that still seems like a lot for a guy who has barely thrown 120 innings over the last 3 years. And most of that work came in 2023 when he was terrible.

One option I've seen thrown around is to sign Morton on a cheap deal (say 8 million) and then sign Bieber to something like 1 year at 12 million with a $20 million team option or a $5 million buyout.

The idea here being that Morton bridges the gap until June/July when Bieber hopefully returns and also provides some stability in case someone gets hurt or go to a 6 man rotation once Bieber returns.

In his latest newsletter, Bowman speculates that the Braves could consider Albies a trade candidate this off season due to his declining defense and cheap 3 years remaining of his contract.

One of the most brilliant takes I have seen in a while.. trade a perennial 3+ war player making 7 million because the defense is declining a bit.

I should have provided his entire commentary on this (there wasnt much more):

There would also be reason to debate moving Ozzie Albies, the three-time All-Star second baseman whose contract includes a $7 million salary for 2025 and $7 million options for 2026 and ’27. That’s a good value if he remains healthy enough to bid for another 30-homer season. He’s also a strong clubhouse presence. But his arm strength has weakened his defensive value and to get a strong return you sometimes must part ways with something significant.

The only way trading Albies makes sense is if someone like Nacho can come in and be an even cheaper 2-3 win guy. I personally think Nacho is worse than Grissom, and I was the low man around here on Grissom. I don't think Nacho is the guy who allows Albies to be traded. Nacho is a no-power guy who can't play up the middle, so that's basically a low end utility option. He is not an answer at SS, or 2B, so if teams want him I would flip him.

That same article also says Waldrep is considered untouchable, which I also disagree with. While he may have made adjustments, nothing I saw in his early data suggests he is going to be impactful.

AJSS has a little better stuff, but even he isn't someone I hesitate to trade for impact MLB talent.

All the rest of the pitching prospects in the upper levels are equally mediocre, or worse.

To me, Baldwin is the most valuable prospect in the system, and it isn't particularly close. He appears to have solid contact skills, and the power is plus. He is a natural platoon partner for Murphy.
