Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

Maybe they'd eat 20M of it as a payback for the Nate Mclouth deal.

Reminds me that Charlie Morton was one of the players we sent to Pittsburgh in the McLouth deal. We also sent OF Gorkys Hernandez and LHP Jeff Locke. I seem to remember that it was the inclusion of Locke that drove some folks to the precipice. McLouth joined the stellar OF of Garrett Anderson, Jeff Francoeur (until he was traded for Ryan Church), and Matt Diaz. Diaz could really stick and killed LHP.

Keller is going into his age 29 season with an xwOBA of .317 the last 3 years over 531 IP, and is the very definition of a bulk innings #4 with some people arguing he's a #3. He’ll make $15MM in 2025, $16.5MM in ’26, $18MM in ’27 and $20MM in 2028. That's not a horrible deal for a guy who should give 600+ innings of average pitching for the next 4 years. He doesn't have a ton of surplus value, so he should come at a reasonable price.

SD seems willing to deal Arreaz and Cease. While Arreaz is the modern embodiment of empty batting average the dinosaur fans probably love, Cease would actually be a great get. Oh, and he's a local so would maybe sign some sort of extension for a 50% discount.

I forgot he was from Georgia.

What helps us in a deal with SD so much is they lack SP and that’s what they need with Musgrove gone for the year. AjSS and Waldrep would really entice them since they are both ML ready.

New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported that a Cody Bellinger trade to the Yankees is experiencing a hang-up due to money.
According to Heyman, the Yankees are interested in adding Bellinger as their starting first baseman with the knowledge that his center field defense would also give them an insurance policy in case rookie Jasson Dominguez isn’t ready. However, the Cubs are “asking the Yankees to take on nearly the full $52.5M Bellinger’s due over the next couple years, and the Yankees are expecting more cash coming back.” The Yankees can certainly take on that level of contract, but with Christian Walker and Pete Alonso also still free agents, it’s possible that New York doesn’t feel the need to give up assets and take on all of Bellinger’s salary until they’re sure he’s the best and most realistic option for them.

Braves signed RHP Wander Suero to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Suero, 33, made just one appearance at the big league level in 2024, allowing a hit and ultimately a run to the only batter that he faced in a loss against the Royals. He was terrific at Triple-A Sugar Land though, posting a 2.66 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 71/33 K/BB ratio over 67 2/3 innings of work. He makes for a very nice bullpen depth addition for the Braves

Take that NL!

So the Cubs aren’t wanting to eat any money. Nobody is gonna give up assets and pay him 30 million. He wouldn’t sniff 30 million on the open market.

33 walks in 67 innings is terrific?????

yeah, the Cubs are not getting rid of Belli.. everyone knows he is going to opt out next year and take the 5 million. So basically a team is paying he 27 (or whatever it is this year) plus the 5 mill opt out for 1 year of his service. Cubs probably need to kick in at least 10 million if they want any kind of return for him.

His numbers in the big leagues pre-2021 were a bit better than that. He looked like he was going to be a force when he pitched with the Nationals, but that's a ways back in the rearview mirror right now. Missed 2022 and I'm guessing that was due to a major arm injury. Like Tapate50 wrote, he's worth a gamble on a minor league deal. Great K numbers.

I see a lot of rumors about Kyle Tucker lately. It only makes sense for the Astros if they re-sign Bregman. So maybe thats close. They dont want to pay both of them so if Bregman re-signs Tucker is going to be traded.

Latest on Cubs and Stros potential deal for Tucker would see the Cubs send Houston Isaac Paredes and 2024 1st rounder Cam Smith.

This would be a much better deal for Houston and absolutely the type of value you get for an elite hitter before a walk year.

I am fine with gambles like this.. I like them actually.. just find the use of the word terrific in the tweet to be a bit of an exaggeration
