Hall of Fame Votes

So let's play a silly offseason game. Say BBWAA says hey X poster, you're still posting on a baseball message board 20 years after it was cool You are basically a baseball writer.

Who do you vote for this year?

Keep in mind this isn't who you think would get in. But who are the people you vote for. Of course you don't have to vote for all 10. But who are your 10 picks?

FOr me in no particular order.

1. Andruw - All time defensive CF, 400+ homers, how he hasn't gotten in is baffling. But he's trending to get in year 10.

2. Chase Utley - He'll be held back by voters because he doesn't have counting stats. But a great defensive 2B who also could hit. His peak was some of the best 2B play of all time.

3. Ichiro - Came into the league past (or on the back end) of their prime, and ****ing killed it. If he had been in the majors since he was 22, he probably is pushing 100 WAR.

4. Beltran - I mean the thunder to the lightning of Andruw, another amazing CF, arguably even better than Andruw overlal because of his 30+ year old play.

5. CC Sabathia - A lock, Him and Ichiro are IMO the 2 first round hall of famers this year.

6. A - Rod - I mean I hate the guy. But yeah he's a lock talentwise. Hard to hold back juicers. Bonds and Clemens should be in too

7. Wagner - THis is where I start having a "do they belong" debates. But Wagner is the tail end of hall of fame closers of his era.

8. Manny - How much roids helped him, who knows. But he's one of the best right handed hitters of his era.

9. Bobby Abreu - Bobby has so many stats that say he should be a hall of famer. But he doesn't feel like a hall of famer, he lacks the highs, but from 24-35 he had a slash of .301/.406/.497. He was a getting on base machine. He was also super durable playing 140 or more games every year from when he became a starter at 24 until his aged 38 season. That's quite excellent (and kind of suspicious in the steroid era) but he just kind of was very good for a really long time. Never elite, just very good to great. His WAR is a hall of famer, just doesn't really feel like it.

10. Mark Buerhle - Honestly, I would be tempted to not vote for him. Or anoyone here. But Buerhle has some arguments. the other debate is Pedrioia who had a HOF peak his WAR7 is comparable to Jose ALtuve who should be a HoF lock. Neither of these are like lock hall of famers and if Iwas the only eprson voting I probably would have stopped after A-Rod honestly.

Good list and logic zito.

Steroids didn't keep David Ortiz out, but some of the other steroid users are such miserable human beings in the PR department and Manny will probably suffer from that. No question about his bat. 81.8 career offensive bWAR (-21.7 with his mitt). Ortiz career numbers were 56.7 and -20.9 respectively.

With you on Abreu. Great player whose numbers make him a borderline HOFer, but there just seems to be something missing from his game. He's more deserving than Harold Baines.

Ichiro is an absolute lock. If his statesied baseball career had started five years earlier, he most likely would own the career hits record.

Ichiro was an awesome player. Like i know you can't 1-1 the numbers. But you are kind of right If he averaged the same 230 hits per season for 5 more years that he did from 27-30 for 22-26 he'd be right there around rose and could just stick around another season to set the record. He's a legend for sure.

Ichiro also feels like a hall of famer, the legend around him as a player. Batting Practice Homers, his absolute missile of an arm, etc.

Early early results look like it's going to be Ichiro, CC, and Wagner this year. All deserve it.

Andruw is +2 from returning voters so far.

Longevity, no scandals, and the face of a dynasty are real factors that go beyond stats. No doubt Andruw had a better peak.

I agree, the intangibles are a factor.. but based on pure talent, Andruw was miles ahead imo. Jeter wasn't even a great shortstop..

Jeter sucks. Never accomplished anything on a legit team. I wouldn't even vote for him to be in the state hall of fame for whichever state he was from.

ALso Yankee Captain carries weight in the biggest media market in america.

Very much so.

Had Dale Murphy put up the exact same career (including lack of postseason appearances) in New York, Boston, Chicago, or LA he would be in the Hall today. Had he done it as a Yankee he likely would've been in no later than his second ballot.

Don Mattingly disagrees

I will let it go when he admits he sucks. Both literally and figuratively.

Since integration, He's 3rd time all time in fWAR - I know longevity from Yankee preference is part of the reason why. First all time in hits, 4th all time in doubles, 6th in homers, 2nd in runs, 5th in RBIs, 2nd in batting average. Etc.

For the Yankees. I dont recognize the accomplishment of cheaters. Rigging the game in your favor is just as much cheating as what the Astros did.

Murphy had a better peak than Mattingly. Even with defensive metrics hating murphy.

Their cases are really similiar. Face of a team in the 80s, MVP winners, multiple GG and AS selections. Mid 40 WAR guys. Both of their teams went on to become dynasties right after they fell off and weren't on the team anymore.
