2025 Spring Training Thread

For the game today - it’s free on MLBTV, and on peachtree.

Cubs trotting out Keller.

Schwelley and lineup :

J Profar (S) LF
A Riley (R) 3B
M Olson (L) 1B
M Ozuna (R) DH
M Harris II (L) CF
O Albies (S) 2B
D Baldwin (L) C
J Kelenic (L) RF
O Arcia (R) SS

If you consider Kelenic a 4th \5th OF Arcia really sticks out as the weak spot

Padres opening with King-Cease-TBA-Pivetta.

Based on when our guys threw, looks like we open with Sale-Lopez-Schwellenbach-Holmes. That would also mean AJSS’ first start comes at LA. I wonder if we might try to go with AJSS on Sunday and save Holmes for LA. Not sure what the better route is - doesn’t really seem like a great option either way.

I think we'd be better off going

Sale

Lopez

Holmes

Smith-Shawver

Schwellenbach

That way we get our top 3 vs LA skip them vs Miami and have them on extra rest vs Philly

I wish we could have gotten Cease or King and went with a 6 man rotation for most of the year. With Sale being fragile, Schwellenbach coming off his most innings ever, Lopez aching already and to end the year last year, and Strider coming back from a year off from surgery it would have helped everybody out.

Doesn't really matter what route we take. We're not going to go undefeated the first week of the season. We all know Snit is going to undermanage in April, and not take these games as serious. Real test will be when Ronnie and Strides come back.

What do you mean we aren’t going undefeated the first week of the season? What the hell kinda’ talk is that ?

Two series in California? Damn son. We got this easy. Our Shortstop alone will carry us.

The funny thing about slider man is that he isn't a bad pitcher.. or at least based on stuff. He has 2 above average pitches and his fastball is not horrible. He has the mix to be a good reliever. his problem is he is so freaking unlucky.. and when you put him in a Braves uni.. he becomes a curse.. literally the anti-chavez..

It would not surprise me to see him have a good season in any other uni that is not a Braves.

No his problem is that he walks the world and gets rattled too easily.

He can live with a higher BB% if his K% is still 25+%. problem is he can't live with the .350+ Babip (MLB avg is about .300) in addition to that walk rate. When that happens he has to be in the zone and that is when the bombs happen.

He's been in the league long enough, that his career .328 BABIP simply isn't a reflection of bad luck. He just isn't that good. Only 2 seasons has he been below the MLB average. And his average EV is worse than league average as well.

He's the very definition of a mediocre reliever.

I never said he was elite.. I said his pitch data says he should be better than his outputs.. He is an unlucky pitcher, that is a fact. His EV are 89.2 versus league average of 89..so he is NOT getting rocked like you are suggesting. I still stand by my statement that I would not be surprised if he has a good season as long as he is NOT wearing a Braves uni.

Would I make him a closer.. well no, I don't believe in a closer. would I allow him to pitch in higher leverage situations.. yes.. but always to start an inning.. he is not a guy you bring in when guys are already on base.

I would probably have him below Riggy, Bummer, Lee, and maybe prince albert ( depending if we see 1st half or 2nd half 2024 Johnson) on the Braves pecking order. But definitely over Dela whoever, Daysbal, and the parade of other NRI and minor league crap the team will be trotting out this season.

BR has league average EV as 88.4 over his time in the majors. So that is almost a full MPH over league average of 88.4 MPH, which indeed is significant. And if you're career average BABIP over 9 years and 358 relief inning is .328, you can't chalk that up to luck. He simply is who he is.

His pitch data doesn't reflect who he actually is. A pitcher can have the best stuff in the world, but if he can't locate it well (LJ can't) and if you get rattled easily (LJ does) then it doesn't mean very much.

In LJ's best season (2021), he had a .255 BABIP and a 3.66 FIP. So even his best season was an illusion.
