It’s perhaps time to take a chill pill on this one. It’s disgusting and will hopefully harm him electorally, but I think we need to draw a line between some unacceptable shit a guy texted a friend 3 years ago and has unequivocally apologized for, and what we’ve seen following Charlie Kirk’s death. It certainly paints a poor picture of who this person is behind closed doors, but if we start demanding anybody who has ever sent an awful text to a friend drop out of races, the only people left will be ones with the most loyal friends. He didn’t break any laws, commit any violence or (as far as I know) promote violence publicly. This isn’t a battle I think the Democratic Party has to fight beyond disavowing the obviously poor conduct.

Shit like this is where we’re chasing our own tail a bit too much. This kid did in fact livestream about her making fun of Charlie Kirk, but he’d also been stalking her for months. We need to stop looking at these types of events solely through the lens of politics. People are being radicalized by their environment, not the flavor of politics within them.

I don’t want to resort to whataboutism, but it’s wild to consider we’ve previously seen teenagers have their college admissions withdrawn because a three year old clip surfaces of them not self-censoring while singing along to a rap song. That’s deemed appropriate punishment for the “crime.” And then we have this situation, where an adult is running for ATTORNEY GENERAL of a state, and those in power are willing to accept his “apology” and support his continued candidacy.
