2025 Around The League Thread

That sold me on Lombard.

Still seeing some weird wants in the comment section of that thread like Eddie Perez, Tyler Flowers, and Travis d'Arnaud for manager. No thanks.

It sounds as though Alex Bregman is going to opt out of his deal with the Red Sox after a year. Has 2 years left at $41 MM per year (a lot of it deferred. Is anyone paying Bregman more than that on an annual basis. I suppose the argument can be made that with a considerable portion of his contract with the Red Sox is in the form of deferred money that he would rather have the cash upfront, but he'll be 32 right before the 2026 begins. I'm really curious about what his market will look like if he does opt out.

I bet he gets 5/150 pretty easy, and that point it's probably worth it given that money now is better than money later. I would say there is a non-zero chance he gets close to 200 million. It's not a particularly strong offensive market in general and the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Phillies, Jays, Reds, Cubs, Tigers, Mariners, and a few other teams with playoff hopes need an upgrade at 3b. So he should have no shortage of suitors.

Tigers aren't trading him, imo. They will likely come to an agreement. They made Verlander the richest pitcher ever back in the day. Then they made Miggy the richest player ever a year later. So I think a deal will come together.

I assume he's looking for 500-600 million and the Tigers and are probably only offering a little over 300 million.

A SP for 500 million is beyond stupid. Throwing a 100 like he does that arm wil go at some point. Get everything you can out of him and let him walk.

Someone is gonna pay it. Or something close to it. Unless they put clamp down on this deferred payments trend, then you're looking a $400+ million contracts as the norm for any top tier players.

This is why this news is coming out now. The Skubal camp likely wants a mega deal this offseason with the new CBA looming next year. Who knows what kind of limiations might be in place then.

I think that's one reason why AA reset the tax so he could spend this offseason bc next year who knows what will happen.

Way to throw your star player under the bus....

He probably knows Harper will take this personally and use it to motivate himself. Whether that works or not, we’ll see.

Translation: I hope the guy I'm paying for 6 more seasons can be elite again and not good/decline further.

The reality is they already got their moneys worth out of Harper and what's happening now and likely to continue going forward with him is what normally happens when a player gets on the other side of 30.

Yup. Honestly his contract isn't even that bad. If he were a FA right now is there any doubt he would get 6/153 with the type of career he has had? With the way contracts have exploded, he is almost a bargain.
