2025-2026 offseason thread

I'm intrigued by Gray. A similar option I've been thinking about is deGrom - the Rangers are actively saying they are going to lower payroll. We were linked to deGrom a lot when he was a free agent.

He's owed $38m in 2026 and $37m in 2027 and a $20m team option in 2028 with no buyout.

The problem with Degrom is can we afford another major injury risk?

Nope. We would just be adding to the injury list with deGrom. Gray makes a lot of sense depending on money but I still hope he gets Cease or somebody controlled longer especially with the CBA up in the air.

If we had a manager this season that knew how to manage work loads, the injury issues likely would not have been as bad. So as long as we hire a competent manager that can do that, I think you can take risks like this.

This year's Dodgers team is a prime example of managing workloads and properly using the IL to keep their star pitchers healthy and fresh for the playoffs. Even the Brewers were able to do this well.

The Ranger I am interested in is Josh Smith. Exactly the kind of utility player we need to target. Maybe we could take back Joc Pedersons 1 year 18 million so we dont have to give up much in prospect capital. Could probably be our starting SS.

how is Joc a utility player. he isn't even a great OF... get guys who can actually play defense so the DH can be rotational position as most of the smart teams have gone to..

No thanks on Joc's 18 million. We need to spend the money we have the best we can and that 18 million would help a lot towards more pitching.

The idea isnt to keep Pederson. We could flip him to someone who would pay atleast 5 million. Meanwhile we get Josh Smith for 3 years and he could give us 2-3 WAR starting at SS. Seems like a good deal to me. I would also love to add Jose Caballero of the Yankees. They didnt give up much to get him but I dont know if they would trade him with the Volpe situation but I think they sign Bichette and he plays SS for 1 year. Caballero is RH hitter and a plus defender who can steal a lot of bases. Smith is LH hitter with the better but a below average defender. A great low cost duo for SS.

Lots of speculation about a potential Skubal trade this offseason. Apparently Tigers offered him 150 million and he wanted 400 million. Tigers are a young team with a great farm system and have been notoriously cheap in recent years. I dont know if he would sign with anyone for 400 million or if that was specific to the Tigers but I dont know if I wouldnt take that deal. Might suck on the back end but the potential on the front end might be worth the risk. The Tigers arent the traditional sellers for prospects which I think works to our advantage. I could see Waldrep as the centerpiece of a trade. I could see them wanting Albies even though he only has 2 years left. Torres is a FA and Albies contract is still a bargain. So I could see something like Waldrep/Albies for Skubal. Even without an extension I might do that. Would be risking a lot on pitcher health but GD if we hit the playoffs with Skuball/Sale/Schwellenbach we might get not hit 3 straight games since the offense seems to play worse the better our SP is.

I'd rather use the resources for a young controllable SS. I've said Whetherholt a lot but he could be had for young pitching more than likely bc they have Winn. They may not wanna trade either. You could use the money savings at SS to get 2 SP.

Kim is the only SS target we should be considering. He is somewhat affordable and won't require a long term deal. Give him 3/60 with a 4th year mutual/vesting option and let's be done with it.

Gray + cash for Nacho. Then they'll rework Gray's deal like they did with Sale's.
Cardinals have a few infield prospects so I think they'd take pitching over Alvarez. I'm curious what the Braves are planning with Alvarez. He's off to a good start in the Arizona Fall League (not that it means much) but the Braves supposedly want to keep him at 3B and not test any positional flexibility.

Devil is in the details, of course, but Detroit has to know that $150 million isn't going to cut it for Skubal.

I think he needs to wait until after the WS. Players have a 5 day window. I don't think people like Alonso have officially opted out yet. They just said they were.
I don't think they'd make an extension announcement at this point either. They'd just wait til after the WS. I have a feeling both sides wanna make a deal though. It'd be good to get on Boras good side.
