Global Events & Politics Überthread

Could turn so many states into vassal states of the US and the lives of the host nations would be infinitely better.

Colonialism was not a bad thing.
I feel like you would have adored Stalin if he had the right Economic policies. Actually, given your open embrace of state-intervention in the economy, you might have only needed him to be saying he was saving America.

That pesky slaughtering of tens of millions of your own people leading up to Stalin would have turned me off.

Schrödinger's Iran.

They're simultaneously the most dangerous threat to the US and always a few weeks away from building a nuclear weapon even though we apparently destroyed their infrastructure months ago to do that and set them back decades, and they're also militarily inept and don't stand a chance against us thus not posing a threat.

Freeing Iranian people from tyranny good.

Helping Ukraine defend itself from Russian invasion bad.

Iran has funded terrorist around the world. They sell oil at discounts to the ccp.

The left has lost the plot entirely.

Crazy.

We're selling soybeans at big discounts to the CCP too! How does the CCP get away with getting big discounts from their allies and their biggest adversary, that being us?

Why can't we just be friends with Iran like we are with Saudi Arabia? They are after all the ones who funded the 9/11 hijackers.

For anyone born after Vietnam, this is the second biggest foreign policy win of their lifetime after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union. The whatabout-ing is incredible to me. I can only imagine what some people would have been like when the Wall fell;

Well the Berlin Wall might be down but according to my calculations Eastern Europe is still communist.

This is a freaking win, a big ass, don’t even bother disputing it, world changing, win. People who try to detract from its significance only detract from their own.

I agree in principle bc the ayatollah is just awful but the US installed the shah in 1959 and that led to the current situation so i need to be convinced of what comes next

Maybe. Maybe not.

The thought experiment I keep running is what if Saddam and his top lieutenants were taken out but the next level of the Ba'ath Party apparatus remained in power.

Something similar is happening in Venezuela. They are being compliant at the moment. But Cabello Rondon is still in charge of the security apparatus.
