Also the MLB trade rumors article specifically says: "These new deals mean that Smith and Farmer will be breaking camp with the club" so not sure what you're reading.

With a split contract if they are assigned the minors, they can elect free agency... unless a better candidate is signed they are surely going to be on the MLB club opening day.
