HOLBERT discusses PERAZA debut

With so much interest in the man we agree is their top positional prospect, here is MiLB.com's story about Peraza's Double-A debut Thursday night.

After playing 66 games with Class A Advanced Lynchburg, Atlanta's fourth-ranked prospect went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple and three runs scored as part of the Braves' 9-4 win over the visiting Jackson Generals.

"He was impressive tonight, but we know what type of player we have in Jose," Mississippi manager Aaron Holbert said. "We got a chance to see him for an extended period of time in Spring Training. He basically worked out with the Double-A team all of Spring Training and was extremely close to making this ballclub.

"But we as an organization felt it was best for him to get a little more seasoning down at the A-ball level. The numbers prove his talent. And it's good to have him now. We feel he'll be a huge addition to this team, as well as a huge value to the Braves organization."

The 20-year-old grounded out to the left side in his first two at-bats. But after Gustavo Nunez tied the game with a two-run double in the fifth, Peraza lashed a triple to center to put the Braves on top.

The Venezuela native singled and scored in both the seventh and eighth. Between his base knock and run in the seventh, he swiped third base.

"He swings the bat extremely well," Holbert said. "People say all the time when they talk about guys that hit for average, it's not always about how hard you hit them, but just finding some holes, and he was able to do that.

"He hit one ball hard tonight, but ended up with three hits, with the line-drive triple, the bloop single as well as the infield single. ... He put the ball in play."

Defensively, Peraza helped out on two of the Braves' three double plays. And Holbert is as optimistic about his second baseman's abilities at the plate as he is about him in the field.

"He plays a great second base. We all know that," the skipper said. "[He is a] converted shortstop, with extremely good hands and a powerful arm there."

I read that today as well. I found it interesting that Peraza almost made AA out of ST. Braves know this kid has the goods. He isn't going anywhere. Hopefully he can play either 3B or CF or maybe TLS can play 3B.

That very last line from the AA skipper says a lot and it speaks to what I saw from Peraza in Rome. The guy has a very strong arm and would be a very good 3B imo if La Stella keeps hitting I'd play Peraza at 3B and not look back. Could you imagine Simmons and Peraza side by side on defense?!

I tried to tell most people here that La Stella's defense wasn't nearly as bad as his first couple games indicated. When guys come up they're gonna be nervous and may make a mistake or two but he has been more than adequate defensively at 2B. A 1-2 of Peraza/La Stella would be awesome.

Lets dream for a second of the 2015 opening day lineup:

TLS
J-Upt
Heyward
Gattis
Freeman
Beej
Simmons
Pitcher
Peraza

Peraza could also conceivably play center. He gives us a lot of options.

Just not sure how they can not play Beej. Are they going to just accept that 15M per year is wasted? CJ has shown some encouraging signs as of late so I suppose its possible.

They are not playing Uggla. If BJ doesn't turn it around the same fate awaits him.

Peraza's arm seems better suited for third that LaStella's to me. But how great would they be as 1 and 2 in the order?

From everything I've read and heard, I think 2B is La Stella's position. Given the stated concerns about his defense since he was drafted, they would have already moved him if they felt he could play somewhere else. There have always been some posters who think Uggla should have been moved to 3B, but Uggla did play some 3B in the minors and he stunk it up sufficiently that he was planted at 2B from that point forward. We don't know what happens on practice fields in the minors, but my guess is that guys they contemplate moving are given time at the positions being contemplated. Peraza is a different story, seeing they have already moved him once. I don't know if they'd move him again in the middle of a season and Kubitza is firmly ensconced at 3B in Mississippi now, but stranger things have happened.

Lol why does everyone want Johnson out of here? Dude literally won us the game last night. Cracks me up.

I like this.

Peraza
Heyward
Upton
Freeman
Gattis
La Stella
Simmons
BJ

I like Peraza (at least to start his career) in the double leadoff position. Maybe TLS becomes a run producer because of how he can hit it but I think ultimately his #1 skill is OBP so I'd leave him in the leadoff spot.

I think its all about what type of hitters this lineup needs. Simmons isn't going anywhere so Peraza is going to take one of CJ or BJ spots.

Wren at leadoff and Peraza batting 2nd = Vince Coleman and Ozzie Smith circa 1986.

Old Willie McGee was the 2 hitter for those teams.

What? Nintendo has been lying to me my entire life.

Thinking longer term, LaStella has the ability to be a successful leadoff man. No question. But he could be one of the best number two guys in baseball. Think of these top three getting on base a lot.

Peraza
La Stella
Freeman
Gattis
Heyward
Upton
Simmons
Cunningham/Constanza/Wren/My Aunt Millie/Anyone who's not BJ and can bit better than .240.

I love Johnson. One of my favorite current players.

Have you thought about writing a sonnet to him...

How I love thee let me count the ways
Yes, call thee by thy pet-name. Lord BABIP
The name given to thee, while a Brave,
To torment those Gnats, sending them to their grave

The rest I leave for you to complete.
