GDT #114 8/6/14 @SEA 3:40 ET

Sure it's his job, but who would have predicted BOTH would hit sub .200 last year? BJ was overpaid, but I think most of us including Wren wouldn't have seen that far ahead.

Uggla is paid thru 2015? That's what sucks. We need someone next year.

There are risks associated with ANY deal. His job is to gather his people around, educate himself, take advice, and make a decision that minimizes that risk and balances it with the potential reward. Do you think he did that with Uggla and BJ?

With BJ it was pretty simple. Sign him and make a trade for his brother. I don't think he really thought much after that.

I know a local Braves scout that wasn't even asked about BJ before the Braves signed him. That was strange since he's watched BJ for 10+ years.

The SMART thing is to get the free agent after trading for the other brother (especially considering how much better Justin is). That way, the free agent has a reason to give you a slight discount.

For a cash strapped team you can't made that big commitment to the level of player BJ is just bc you want his brother.

How was Wren to know Uggla and BJ would be so bad? Lowe was a desperation signing, I didn't like it, but I understood it. Kawakami was untested in the majors and wasn't horrible the first few years.

I'd never have guessed Uggla and BJ would pan so badly.

I miss Chipper Jones. :(

Was Melky a Wren move? He was another outsider that was terrible here.

Fck a Heyward, fck a Upton, fck a Simmons, fck a Gonzalez, fck a Wren, fck a Freeman, and fck a Brave.

This team is done. They aren't the fckn Cardinals in their Wild Card WS season so quit looking for justification or false hope. This team is a fckn wash. Prepare yourself for football season like me. Enjoy the rest of the season folks. MODS: Ban me if ya like.

If we miss the playoffs, Fredi might be gone. They might try the old coaching staff purge first, but there's a non-zero possibility that Fredi gets the axe, IMO.

For those who are on the leadership hobbyhorse . . . I dunno. None of us can really say. Remember, this team missed the playoffs after a 9-18 September in 2011. That team featured Tim Hudson, Brian McCann, David Ross, Eric Hinske, and Larry Jones. it doesn't get much more veteran leadership-y than that.

maybe we are getting that Fredi september suckage out of the way in August this year?

Bottom line is it all comes down to this home stand and the following road trip in Pittsburgh and Cincy. 17 games against strong competition. I think we need at least 11-6 or 12-5.

More specifically, it's going to come down to this weekend. We're either going to be 3.5 or 4.5 out. We have to at a minimum win 2 of 3 and probably need to sweep against the Nats. If we lose the series, we're going to be down to our last breath, and if we get swept, we're done, and it'll be time to start seeing what unnecessary pieces we can sell off by the Aug. 31 deadline.

I really think our only shot for October is winning the division. Because I think at least two teams are coming out of the Central, and the Giants will probably get the other one.

We are still a ways away from must win games. If the situation lbs were reversed the chicken Littles around here would say "the Nats have two losing streaks of 7+ games and we only have a 4.5 game lead". Teams are never as good as the look on a winning streak and not as bad as they look on a losing streak. The Nats aren't that great either.
