MLB Playoffs Thread

Lol.
We already knew that Madison Bumgarner saved the game for the Giants, but now the scorer makes it official. MLB changed the ace's win to a five-inning save, deciding that Jeremy Affeldt's one-hit, no-run performance wasn't "ineffective."

I think that's the right choice, actually. Both played a huge part, and, like you said, Bumgarner saved the game.

Blast from the past. Bochy's a great manager, but I wonder if he had any trepidation about using Bumgarner. The last time he used his ace as a reliever it didn't work out that well. He inserted Kevin Brown into a tight situation in an elimination game against the Braves in 1998 and Brown gave up a bomb to Michael Tucker which contributed to a Braves' win, forceing another game (which the Padres won). In an ironic note, because Cox had used Rocker early to snuff out a Padres' threat, Greg Maddux pitched the 9th to earn his only playoff save.

Give it up for the Giants. Like some in here, I thought Sabean's first world championship team was the classic "blind squirrel finding an acorn," but he's really put a solid squad together. They kind of remind me of some of the Braves' teams during our impressive run (only with a couple more World Series rings). Very good starting pitching. Reliable bullpen. Good, but not great defense top-to-bottom. Power spread through the line-up. Not particularly swift or athletic, but fundamentally sound. Just a good team that has the proverbial "tough outs" in the line-up. What is particularly impressive about this year's edition is the injuries that they overcame to win it.

Some other thoughts.

1. This is what a lot of us talk about when we say having an ace wins championships.

2. Kansas City became my second favorite team this postseason. I think they've got a bright future and could win it all here in the next couple years. Remarkable run.

3. Gotta hand it to Bochy. One of the great underrated managers in history.

How many aces have we had and none ever put up a performance like this? In fact most crap the bed rather than rise up to the occasion except Smoltz of course, and can't forget Glavine's 95 WS.

Also, when was the last time we ever had a performance like Sandoval/Pence put up in the WS? Seems like we never have a hitter carry us like this.

Why is Bochy some great manager all of a sudden? He rode Bummy this whole post season. He's has aces lock things down each post season they ended up winning it all. How people claim he's great is beyond me.

Bleh I was sooo rooting for the Royals. So what to make of these Giants from a historical perspective? A dynasty? Maybe the worst dynasty of all time? They have to be the only team to win 3 WS in 10 seasons or less without ever having the best record in their league. When they didn't win the WS, they didn't even make the playoffs.

3 WS in 5 seasons is a dynasty anyway you want to look at it.

Sure they arent flashy teams but they get it done when it matters.

The ability to think outside of the box in a crucial situation? How many managers pull Tim Hudson before he even pitched two innings and gave up more than three runs? How many would have ridden a short rested Bumgarner for five innings instead of going to their pen or closer?

As this postseason proved, not many.

Isn't niners one of those it's all or nothing type of fans?

He has always said we sucked and weren't that great because we had 1 ring in 14 straight playoff appearances, yet he doesn't understand why people think Bochy is a great manager for winning 3 out of 5.

But that's not the plan. We can't deviate from the plan. The playoffs aren't the time to make bold moves.

Wow! Some of you guys are pathetic! The Giants have won 3 World Series in 5 years. The Braves have won 1 in the last 23 years. I'm a die-hard Braves fan since the 1950s but come on, you have to give the Giants a lot of credit. Don't be so jealous.

If Bochy was managing the Royals and Yost was managing the Giants the outcome would have been different. Managers do make a difference.

Not sure about that.

Yost didn't really manage that bad of a series.

Bumgarner was the xfactor. Essentially pitched 3 starts of shutout ball. Not to take away anything from Bochy but Yost didn't blunder.

Bumgarner was untouchable this post season. Anyone could see that the Royals weren't going to hit him. A great manager because he has the best pitcher in baseball on his staff?

Whoa whoa whoa there.

You know how many times we've told you, some teams and players just get hot at the right time in October? There's no way the Royals were a better team than the Angels or even Baltimore in the regular season. They got hot at the right time, and everything was working for them until they ran into San Fran. San Fran was close to being out of a wild card spot with a few weeks left into the season until we and Milwaukee collapsed. They got hot at the right time, and Bumgarner pitched a performance we probably won't see again this generation.

So when we say that the Braves get awful luck in the playoffs, you say it's an excuse. When the Giants and Bochy manage to win 3 WS in 5 years, is that luck? No credit goes to Bochy at all I suppose? No consistency with you. You say rings and championships are all that matters. Bochy has 3 now, yet you question if he's even a good manager. lol
