GM/Winter Meetings Thread

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is linking Atlanta and the Cardinals in trade talks, saying they match up well and a lot of people have said the Cards love Heyward.

"The Cardinals do appear to line up well with Atlanta, which could make at least one of its free agents available for trade. Jason Heyward, a gifted defensive player in right field, is a free agent at the end of the 2015 season — exactly the kind of term the Cardinals would like. Justin Upton also is signed through the end of the 2015 season. The Braves, guided by new president of baseball operations John Hart, who is effectively the general manager, would probably seek pitching, and the Cardinals continue to have depth there."

Please no.

I'd honestly rather see him in New York than playing for the ****ing Cardinals.

Desmond turned down 7/107.

WTF?

I really like Giancarlo Stanton (although I keep caling him Mike in my head) as a player, but if the 10 year/$300 million contract happens for him, the economics of baseball will not only s*ck, they'll stink like a dead squirrel in the wallboards.

Frank’s son RT @Brewers: The #Brewers have acquired CF Kyle Wren from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for RHP Zach Quintana.

We are now a Wren free organization. I'm a bit upset at this as I thought Wren had some potential. Here is Zach Quintana fangraphs player page (looks like pretty much nothing):

As much as #Braves like Bethancourt's talent, still question focus/attitude. They'll get at least 1 veteran who can step in or split duties.

Smart by Desmond. He will get a lot more than that.

Last 3 years:

WAR:

Desmond- 14
Tulo 11.8
Peralta 11.5
Hanley 11.3
Rollins 10

Reyes signed 6/106 in 2012
Tulo signed 10/157 in 2011
Andrus signed 8/120 in 2013
Hanley Signed 6/70 in 2009

Desmond has a fWAR of 9.8 the last 3 years. And I'm not sure how that really compares to someone like Tulo who was coming off 2 5+ WAR seasons when he signed his deal. In fact if you really want to compare Desmond to those guys why don't you post their WAR the years prior to signing those deals. Apples and Oranges.

Desmond could get more then that on the open market. But he's going to have to wait 2 years to get it. Hope he stays healthy.

He will end up regretting that.

He's certainly not better than Tulo. Andrus got 8/120 and Reyes got 6/106 so any team going after Desmond will likely start there and add some dollars.

Desmond is a free agent after this coming up season.

Desmond actually has 3.101 service time. So he's actually not a free agent until after the 2017 season. So he has 3 more years to wait instead of 2. And if this deal is buying out his 3 arby years then his post arby years would see him getting around 20 million a year. He is dumb to turn this down. But Boras is his agent so that's no surprise.

And Andrus and Reyes were both better players when they signed those deals as well.

And that's a terrible contract.

Not sure what your source is, but its wrong.

Desmond is a free agent after this coming season; was arby eligible in 2013.

Unless Desmond suffers a severe injury, he will get more than the 7/107 contract that was offered (that included the last 2 arby years at 2/17.5 total). They offered him 5/89.5 starting in the 2016 season.

And the Pirates nab A.J Burnett again for $8.5MM ... nice deal for them, especially seeing as Burnett took $5MM less than the player option he declined with Philly earlier this offseason. Nice to see that the desire to win still trumps the desire for money (not like A.J is hurting, anyways) ... sometimes.
