You can have a good season and still not win it all. Niners thinks the Braves suck because they haven't won a playoff series and cant make a deep run. While in reality a first round exit is the same as losing in the world series in the end. All a team can do is make the playoffs. Everything after that is a crapshoot.

I agree you can still have a good season but nobody really remembers a "good season"... what are we all playing for? A World Series Championship and obviously the strategy that we've implied the last 3 years of being an all-or-nothing offense that has relied solely on the home run ball hasn't worked.
Just because it didn't work for the Braves doesn't mean it doesn't work. Teams can win in many different ways. It's easy to look at someone like the Royals and say we need to build a team like them to win but they should of lost in the wild card game if it wasn't for a meltdown by Oakland. Winning in the playoffs is all about getting hot at the right time and getting some breaks to go your way. That can happen to literally any team.

I don't think you understand the point... with the young guys we have under contract and the ones that aren't going to be traded (Freeman, Simmons, Bethancourt, and unfortunately Upton and Johnson) we already have too many all-or-nothing type guys. So instead of adding more of those types (Gattis) it would be best to get someone who can play exceptional defense and who can get on-base at an above average clip while also swiping some bags, and any power you get is a bonus. Ex: Christian Yelich / Adam Eaton / and Alex Gordon to an extent.
If you could do that sure. But guys that play great defense and can get on base at a good clip are more valuable that Gattis so I doubt anyone would make that trade. And all or nothing type guys can work if they aren't horrible. see 2013.

I would be willing to make a bet that before the White Sox signed LaRoche if the Braves had offered them Gattis for Easton + prospect they (the Sox) would have taken that deal in a heartbeat.
As far as the "see 2013" comment goes... what good happened? A good regular season? All-or-nothing offenses don't fare well in the postseason simply because the pitching is typically very very good, just as it was in 2013.
the Red Sox that year had a pretty all or nothing offense. Struck out over 20% of the time. 2nd in the majors in isolated slugging. They just had good players which is why they led the league in offense.

2013 Braves: .249 AVG / .321 OBP with 688 R, 1,354 Hits, 181 HR, 64 SB, 1334 K's
2013 Red Sox: .277 AVG / .349 OBP with 853 R, 1,566 Hits, 178 HR, 123 SB, 1308 K's
They had a strong offense but weren't all-or-nothing evident by their .277 team average, 1,566 Hits, and not to mention almost doubling our SB's.
They had better hitters that's for sure. But they still struck out a ton and hit a lot of homers. Which is what the Braves offense was based around. That type of offense can work. You just can't have black holes like BJ Upton.

It certainly can work, but the only way it can is if those guys striking out the most are also hitting .260-.270 and driving in 85-100.

I've always thought you could have a successful, productive lineup with some all-or-nothing guys, you just can't have a lineup full. Nothing that has happened has changed my mind.
Well we had a few that weren't. Namely Jason, Freddie, and Simmons. Granted Simmons isn't the best of hitters but he didn't strike out much. Jason also put the ball in play quite a bit with a low strikeout rate and Freddie is an all around good hitter. I think you just need good hitters regardless of what category they fall in. If the team was full of Justin Uptons who strike out over 25% of the time they would still put up quite a few runs. Of course that's taking it to the extreme but it gets the point across. Good hitters is what you want. And the Braves have a couple of guys that are as far away from good as you can get. And that just magnifies things.
I would say if we make the playoffs and are not embarrassed there it would be a good season . There's nothing wrong with losing to a better team.as long as we don't totally look out classed in the series ( like the dodgers series)
Getting on base and hitting bombs is a very good offensive strategy. The problem with the Braves in 2013 was that nobody got on base, as evidenced by the .321 OBP.
