Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

Some of you might remember that I did an internship with MLB.com way back in 2006. I sometimes read Mark Bowman, remember that MLB.com did not think highly of my abilities and feel the sudden urge to chug bleach.

Lololol, gosh, I'm really sorry, Maddux.

And passive sentences are something Mark Bowman has reason to prove to be part of his writing often. Unfortunate is perhaps the feeling that comes to mind when I read a sentence constructed by the dean of MLB.com sports writers, who would prove to be Mark Bowman.

Funny phone call to Stern and Bowden on XM yesterday until I thought about it a little. IF the Cubs are only going to play on ONE of the SPs this winter, why not see what Theo and Jed's level of interest in Justin is??? They're not going to want to go completely young across the board, so what about...

Cubs Get:

Justin, Minor, and Carpenter

Braves Get:

Alcantara, Almora, C. J. Edwards, and Billy McKinney

That would potentially make the Cubs a legitimate contender if they signed another second tier SP THIS season, and they've certainly got the resources to give Justin a market-value extension to stay and be one of those veteran leaders. They'd then be in position to play on Price/Cueto/Greinke (if he opts out)/etc. next winter.

CF- Russell, SS- Castro, LF- Upton, 1B- Rizzo, 3B- Bryant, RF- Soler, 2B- Baez, C- Castillo

SPs- Lester/Scherzer, Arrieta, Minor, Santana/Volquez/Peavy/Hamel, Wood

The caller had several other players involved (Gattis/B. J./Vogelbach and maybe someone else), this would more or less constitute my "counter".

It's your parents' fault that they provided you with the intellectual prowess that prevents you from writing at Bowman's third-grade level.

You're not half the man Bowman is.

I have been given reason to believe that it is ok to assume the Braves will bring back both Beachy and Medlen.

If this "gives reason to believe" meme sticks to Bowman, I can retire from the internet happy with having made two truly outstanding contributions to the culture, provided you count me re-appropriating "Sucking Vortex of Doom" for Vinny Castilla.

Apparently the Padres are in win now mode and are desperate for bats. If we truly are targeting 2017 I propose the following.

Padres get: Justin and BJ (they have an opening in CF too)

Braves get: Rymer Liriano and Matt Wisler. Probably would have to take on a salary like Maybin or Quientin.

Yes this doesn't get us the Walker type prospect but we get a long term OF in Liriano and a very good looking mid rotation starter who's ready in Wisler.

The more I look at it, the more I love the Padres as a trade partner if they really are interested in Justin and can add salary. They could honestly be a "one-stop shop" for us if you think about it. I'd change the deal a bit though...

Padres Get:

Justin Upton - $14,500,000
Evan Gattis - $650,000
B. J. Upton - $14,450,000
Mike Minor - $5.1 million

Braves Get:

Tyson Ross - $5.7 million
Carlos Quentin - $8 million
Cameron Maybin - $7 million
Rymer Liriano - $550,000
Jesse Hahn - $550,000
Hunter Renfroe (6 years)
Matt Wisler (6 years)

(And yes that was me proposing it to Duquette on XM a minute ago...lol)

The deal more or less boils down to Justin, Gattis, and Minor for Ross, Liriano, Renfroe, Hahn, and Wisler, plus we have the higher chance that Maybin finally remains healthy and contributes in CF (and we'd control him through 2017 in the event he did). In the event we bought out the option years for Quentin and Maybin (if we couldn't trade them), they'd cost us $27 million vs. B. J.'s $46 million.

Can someone give a quick rundown on the younger players involved in this idea?

Ross is a stud, and it's conceivable (IMO) that Roger could turn him into an "Ace" - 8.97 Ks/9 last year with the second highest GB% in MLB. He'd be a monster with Andrelton and Peraza up the middle, and an absolute BEAST if we could add Moncada at 3B.

Liriano and Renfroe would be our corner OFs for years - Liriano's a career .274/.342/.429/.772 hitter in the minors (with power yet to tap), Renfroe's a career .268/.334/.467/.801 career minor league hitter (with power yet to tap).

Hahn and Wisler project as #3s (ceiling).

If Maybin somehow ever stayed healthy, he'd be likely to sign a below-market deal since he's from Asheville, NC and isn't likely ever going to get a very good offer given his injury history.

I don't see why the Padres would even consider moving Ross or taking on BJ. I think it might be time to come to terms with the idea of BJ being the highest paid 4th OFer in MLB.

I could see a 2 for 1 deal involving JUp or Gattis that nets the Braves one of the SP prospects plus one of the OF prospects though.

The Padres aren't in win now mode they are in "pretend we have a shot at signing/trading for big name players" mode. Seriously, when was the last time the Padres signed a free agent to a big money contract t or traded for a rental player like Justin?

I've been skeptical every time I've heard them mentioned as well...that said, I'd love for us to be the ones on the plus-side of a new GM trying to make a splash for once.

The Rangers are rumored to be pushing hard to sign Hunter. If they get him that removes yet another possible trade destination for JUp and Gattis.
